If you get over into
WVA and get up around the Tygert Valley, that is the
area our William,
father of Francis lived. Lovely
area.
Another interesting
thing too, if you get around Romine Mills, you will
find Raccoon Run where
our Jacob Rogers lived, then just down the road you
will find Arnold's Run.
Jacob had a son Arnold. Then
looking at the
local, picturing the
distance between there and where Catharine and Francis
lived, one can see the
distance would have been much shorter by horse.
It
got confusing as there
were two Lost Runs in the area.
Also, I don't really
think there was any religeous problem, due to the fact
they were going back
and forth to Cauraco. Must have been
in some kind of
trade business, or a
thought. Shirl

SAMUEL
WELLS7
BOICE
(FRANCIS6,
WILLIAM5,
JOHANNES4
BUIS,
JOHANNES
BUIS3
SR.,
JAN THYSSEN2
BUIJS,
THYS1)
was born March 30, 1816 in Marion Co. Virginia, and died March 22, 1889 in
Nevada, Missouri. He married SARAH
ELIZABETH
TOWNSEND
1840 in Ohio, daughter of JOHN
TOWNSEND
and RUTH
BUNDY.
Notes for SAMUEL
WELLS
BOICE:
When his son Isaac was
drafted to serve in the Union Army, (Isaac was recovering from phnemonia) Samuel
fearing for his son's life, sold his farm and paid a substitute to go in his
place.
He then bought a
covered wagon and horses and started the family west. He ended up in Missouri
but his children met married and settled along the way.
Once in Missouri he
farmed tabacco and made baskets which he sold to supplement his income.
Notes for SARAH
ELIZABETH
TOWNSEND:
Sarah's mother had died
when she was a child. Her father remarried Margaret Brown . She was not fond of
her step mother who she reffered to as "Red Headed Kate".
She met and married
Samuel Boice when she was 13 years old. Samual had been working on a neighboring
farm. Together they would have 12 children.
She was 14 years old when she had the twins.
Family legend has it
that Sarah was left a large sum of money by an Uncle in England. Since they
didn't have much money they hired a local attorney who was described as
"poor as a church mouse". The attorney went to England and returned to
tell them there was no money. The attorney then bought a new house, a new office
and a $100,000 painting.
The Boice's had no
money to sue so they lost everything. It's
interesting to see that lawyers have changed much thru the years.
Notes of interest:
By Naomi Dennison,
Independence Missouri
My grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Townsend Boice had twins, Abraham and
Isaac who were the
right age to serve in the Civil War. Abraham
being
an invalid, couldn't
serve and Isaac had had a very serious bout of
pneunomia when his call
came. Mr. Boice fearing for the
boy's health,
sold his farm and hired
another man to go in Ike's place. The
family
then loaded up their
household goods, their children and driving their
livestock started out
for Missouri in covered wagons. Grandfather
Boice
was able to buy a
relinquishment near the town of Nevada, Missouri,
where he started
farming again. They had pretty rough
times for many
years, but kept their
family together.
When Sarah Elizabeth's mother, Ruth Townsend, died, Sarah E., was
given the "Family
Genealogical Record" of the Townsend Family, which was
written on a rolled
parchment, and had been brought from England many
years before.
Sarah Boice carried it in the covered wagon to her new
home in Missouri.
This parchment record proved they were descendants of
Lord Horatio Townshend
of Raynham, Norfolk, England.
When the times were rough... little money, and the winters were cold
in Missouri, Isaac, cut
up the parchment for shoe strings for the
younger children who
had to walk three miles to school through snow and
ice.
Sarah E., tried to put as much as she could remember down on
paper, but she only had
home-made ink and by the time (100 years later)
we tried to read it,
the ink had faded and nothing would restore the
writing.
(The paper is still in possession of Naomi Dennison).
Years later when the Townshend Estate of Raynham, Norfolk, England
came up for
settlement... the American descendants in Missouri, hired a
lawyer to represent
their interests. The lawyer's name
was Harding, and
he lived in Kansas
City... not a very good lawyer and certainly not a
wealthy one.
One of Sarah Boice's sons went with him to England to
protect the family
interest.
The men returned... in time... without
the estate, at least so far as
the family was
concerned, but the Boice man soon was able to buy a very
rich farm and stock it
with fine registered cattle; send his children
East to finishing
schools, and became so "uppity" that he would have
nothing to do with the
rest of the family. Mr. Harding the
attorney,
suddenly bloomed out
into a BIG BUSINESS MAN, buying into several places
of business in Kansas
City. He bought property in the
"Swank-upper-class
district," and ran for several offices.
He died a
few years later... a
very very rich man.
NOTE:
This was the legend I had heard all of my life and the one that
had started me on the
quest of our ancestors.
