World War II Gold Star Boys--Those Who Gave All


Note: the following list was compiled from several sources, including an article in the SL Register, obituaries and other items. I apologize if anyone has been left off this list, and would be happy to add his/her information.

ANDERSON, Virgil Wendel--flight officer, killed in action Jan. 23, 1945 when his C-47 transport plane was hit by fire over Belgium. Born Mar. 19, 1923 in Alta; graduated Alta High School in 1941. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Arlene Anderson of Storm Lake and his mother, Mrs. Margaret Anderson and sister both of Des Moines. Flew over fifty missions. Burial in a military cemetery in southeastern Belgium.

ARNOLD, Wallace L.--PFC, killed in action in the southwest Pacific. No survivors listed

BACHMAN, Carl O.--From Storm Lake. Killed in action March 14, 1945 on Iwo Jima. Survived by his wife of Chevy Chase, Maryland and his father, Carl O. Bachman, Sr., of Sioux City.

BAHR, Robert John--Tail gunner, United States Naval Reserves, killed in plane crash at Jacksonville (FL) Naval Station, July 21, 1943. Graduated Alta High School in 1942. Survived by parents, Rev. and Mrs. Otto Bahr of Hanover, also two brothers and four sisters. Body lost at sea and not recovered.

BAIR, Lewis John--Specialist 2nd Class, United States Naval Reserves, went down on the U.S.S. Spence on Dec. 18, 1944. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Goldie Bair and three children of Sioux Rapids .

BERTNESS, Philip S.--PFC, killed in action in Germany, Feb. 8, 1945. Entered service March 1943. Had received a Purple Heart for injuries received Christmas 1944. Graduate of Sioux Rapids High School, class of 1940. Survived by his parents, M/M Raymond Bertness of Sioux Rapids; also a brother, Raymond, and a sister, Joyce.

BOETTCHER, Otto P.--Staff Sgt.; killed in action in Africa, Nov. 8, 1942; survived by his parents, H. O. and Emma A. Boettcher, Storm Lake. Burial in a U.S. Military Cemetery in North Africa.

BROCK, Arnold Plez--PFC, killed in action near Heilbronn, Germany on April 9, 1945; survived by his wife, Mrs. Jeanette Cuthbert Brock and three children; his father Charles, all of Sioux Rapids; also two brothers, Don and Dean of Storm Lake; buried in a U.S. Military Cemetery in France.

BROWN, Russell A.--Lieutenant; presumed dead after missing in action, May 26, 1945; survived by his wife, Mrs. Leona Schibner Brown of Decatur, Ill., and his parents, M/M Lewis Brown of Cheneyville, Ill., and his sister, Mrs. Edgar Winterhof of Alta.

BURWELL, Leonard Arvin "Tommy"--U.S. Navy, Water Tender 2nd Class; presumed dead Nov. 24, 1943 after reported missing on Gilbert Island. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Esther Neumann Burwell and daughter Patricia of Storm Lake, and his parents, M/M Walter Burwell of Storm Lake.

CAIN, Loren--PFC, age 21, killed in action in Germany, Dec. 17, 1944. Inducted Apr. 1, 1944. Graduate of Rembrandt High School. Survived by his father, Roe Cain of Rembrandt and two sisters.

CHRISTENSEN, Axel S.--Died when his ship was torpedoed in the Gulf of Mexico, June 17th, 1942; survived by his wife, Vera Lange Christensen and his parents, M/M S. P. Christensen of Newell, and three brothers. A joint memorial service for he and his cousin, Gerhardt Kjolhede, was held at the Danish Lutheran church in Newell in Sept., 1943.

COOKE, Francis E.--Lieutenant; Killed when the B-17 he was piloting crashed on take-off at Deenthorpe, England on Sep. 17, 1944; born on a farm south of Newell, attended Newell schools and graduated from Our Lady of Good Counsel in Fonda in 1942; survived by his mother, Mary Mackey Cooke, two sister and four brothers.

DAGNER, Reynold A.--Corporal from Albert City; died in a Japanese prison camp at Osaka on July 27, 1943. Survived by his parents, M/M Gustav L. Dagner of Albert City, and a sister, Mrs. Murl Andreas of Spirit Lake.

DANDY, Wilbur Dean--Aviation Machinist, killed when plane crashed into the Pacific near Hawaii, Dec. 19, 1944. Survived by his parents, M/M William Frisby Dandy of Sioux Rapids.

DIETERS, John--Died Aug. 25, 1943 while enroute by train to the Farragut Idaho, naval station for recruit training. Survived by his wife of Storm Lake.

FOELL, Harold--Killed in action on Luson, Mar. 19, 1945. Survived by his parents, M/M Carl Foell of Storm Lake.

GUSTAFSON, Elmer August--Lieutenant, died Jan. 14, 1944 from submersion while stationed at San Diego. Survived by parents, M/M Ernest Gustafson of Albert City.

GATES, John W.--Staff Sgt., died Mar. 4, 1942, the day after being injured during demolition practice at Ft. Knox.

GEIGER, James Philip--Lieutenant; died in Italy Jan. 10, 1945 in explosion of trip flare; survived by his mother, Mrs. Marie Geiger of Fort Dodge.

GESY, Emmett--Corporal; killed in action in Belgium Feb. 9, 1945; survived by his parents, M/M Fred Gesy of Fonda, also four brothers and six sisters.

GREY, Frederick Gustav--Lieutenant; killed in action over France, Nov. 10, 1944. Born at Sioux Rapids on Oct. 13, 1923; graduated from Sioux Rapids Consolidated School in 1941. Survived by parents, M/M Walter Grey of Sioux Rapids and his wife, Mrs. Lorraine Grey of Storm Lake.

HANSEN, Herbert Andrew--2nd Lieutenant; wounded Jan. 11 and died Jan. 12, 1944 in the Mediterranean theatre. Born Nov. 21, 1918 in BV Co.; graduated Sulphur Springs High School in 1938 and enlisted in National Guard Oct. 1940 and was called up Feb. 10, 1941. Survived by his parents, M/M Carl Hansen of Sulphur Springs; two sisters, and his grandparents, M/M A. A. Petersen of Newell; also a fiancee, Priscilla Dionne of Port Arthur, Texas.

HORSMAN, Clarence T.--PFC; killed in action Feb. 12, 1945; survived by parents, M/M Clarence Horsman of Rembrandt.

ILLUM, Wesley J.--Went down with cruiser Vincennes at Guadalcanal, Aug. 10, 1942. Survived by his parents, M/M Hans Illum of Storm Lake.

JENSEN, Arnie I.--Tech 3rd Grade, age 23; died June 9, 1944 when his boat was torpedoed while crossing the English Channel; survived by his mother, Mrs. Margarethe Jensen of Newell; burial U.S. Military Cemetery, Brookwood, England.

KENNEDY, Cecil F.--Sgt.; killed when bomber was lost at sea June 16, 1945; survived by his parents M/M M. P. Kennedy of Storm Lake.

KENNEDY, Michael G.-- Lieutenant; killed when Liberator was shot down over Bremen, Germany, Nov. 1943. Survived by parents, M/M M. P. Kennedy of Storm Lake.

KETTLE, Wallace Walter--Lieutenant; killed in place crash at Kirbyville, Texas on Aug. 31, 1942. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Arlene Kettle of Minneapolis and his parents, M/M Lyle O. Luther of Des Moines.

KJOLHEDE, Clifford J.--2nd Lieutenant; killed in crash of army bomber near Pueblo air base, Nov. 3, 1943. Survived by parents, M/M Chris Kjolhede of Alta.

KJOLHEDE, Gerhardt Marvin--Ship torpedoed and sank at Port Darwin, Australia, Feb. 9, 1942. Survived by father, Carl Kjolhede and grandmother, Mrs. Sondergaard both of Newell. A joint memorial service for he and his cousin, Axel S. Christensen, was held at the Danish Lutheran church in Newell in Sept., 1943.

KLEIST, Chester F.--Killed at Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. Resident of Newell at time of enlistment. Father, William Kleist of Storm Lake, now deceased; mother, Mrs. Isabella Kliest of Long Beach, Cal.

LANDSNESS, Donald Oliver--Captain; killed in action in New Guinea, Sept. 21, 1942. 1932 graduate of Sioux Rapids High School and also Iowa Sate. Survived by his wife, Margaret Landsness and 2 month old baby daughter, Ruth Ann, of Jesup, and parents, M/M J. Oliver Landness of Sioux Rapids; also a brother and sister.

LANGENWALTER, Orville J.--Killed in Pearl Harbor on the USS Arizona, Dec. 7, 1941; survived by parents, John Langenwalter of Fonda and Emma Langenwalter of Newell; also three sisters and four brothers.

LARSON, Otto T.--killed in automobile accident at Camp Shelby, Miss., no date given. Survived by father, Ole Larson of Sioux Rapids.

LESSMEIER, Frank Allen--Pharmicist's Mate, 3rd class; declared dead after missing a year. Survived by his parents, M/M Fred P. Lessmeier, Storm Lake.

McCABE, Maurice--Lieutenant; killed in plane crash in Madera, Cal., Mar. 18, 1944. Survived by his parents, M/M Albert McCabe of Storm Lake.

MADSON, Duane--Corporal; died Mar. 15, 1945 of wounds received on Iwo Jima. Survived by his wife, of Alta, and his parents, M/M Marinus Madson of Storm Lake.

MAIDEN, Vaun V.--PFC; killed in action in Asiatic theatre; survived by wife, Mrs. Lavonne M. Maiden of Albert City.

MELEKY, Joseph--Flight officer; killed in invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944. Survived by wife, Mrs. Vesta D. Remillard Meleky of Sioux Rapids.

MENEFEE, Freddie O.--Staff Sgt.; killed in European area, no date; survived by mother, Mrs. Minnie Menefee, Sioux Rapids

MILLER, Harold Richard--Lieutenant; killed in China-Burma-India theatre July 11, 1945. Survived by his wife, of Waterloo, and his mother, Mrs. Nell Hussey Miller of Storm Lake.

MILLER, Jules Nicholas--Fireman 1st Class; died when carrier Hornet was sunk by the Japanese, Oct. 26, 1942. Survived by parents, M/M Joe Miller, Storm Lake.

MOSES, Richard L.--2nd Lieutenant; killed in raid over Germany, April 22, 1944. Survived by parents, M/M Joe Miller of Storm Lake.

NEUMAN, Earnest Earl--Motor machinist mate, Coast Guard; drowned while in performance of his duties on lifeboat Triumph. Survived by his father, John Neuman of Sulphur Springs and a sister, Mrs. Leonard Burwell of Storm Lake.

NORLIN, Carl H.--PFC; killed on Luzon Jan. 27, 1945; survived by his mother, Mrs. Alice A. Norlin of Alta.

OATMAN, Wilbur I.--Tech. Fifth Grade; killed in Germany, Apr. 8, 1945. Born April 9, 1916. Survived by his mother, Mrs. August Drier of Storm Lake and his father, Will Oatman of Carroll; also a sister and two brothers.

OLSON, Vernon Albert--Ship's cook, 2nd class; drowned in hurricane off the Atlantic, Sep. 13, 1944. Survived by his parents, M/M Albert R. Olson of Rembrandt.

PENDER, Welburn Morton-- Fireman 2nd class; previously missing, now reported dead.

PEPER, Ronald Alfred--PFC; killed in action in invasion of France, July 12, 1944. Survived by his parents, M/M A. N. Peper of San Diego.

PETERSON, Frederick--Killed in action in Normany, July 29, 1944. Survived by parents, M/M Fred Peterson of Marathon.

PETERSON, Layne Woodrow--Aviation machinist's mate, USNR; died from gunshot wounds at Guadalcanal, Oct. 28, 1942. Born Oct. 4, 1918 in Alta. Survived by parents, Algot and Florence Peterson of Newell.

PETERSON, Marvin--PFC; killed in action on Iwo Jima Feb. 21, 1945; survived by his parents, M/M Milo Peterson, and his grandparents, M/M Charles Graham of Linn Grove.

PYLE, Howard L.--Lieutenant; killed in action between Borneo and New Guinea, May 23, 1944; survived by wife and also his mother, Mrs. Jettie Pyle of Storm Lake.

RYDEN, Arnold M.--PFC; killed in action in France, Nov. 24, 1944; survived by parents, M/M Gust Ryden of Alta.

SCHRODER, Raymond--Gunner's mate 1st class; killed in action in southwest Pacific Nov. 13, 1942; survived by wife, Mrs. Velma Oglesby Schroder and mother, Mrs. Florence Schroder, both of Newell.

SCHULER, Donald E.--Went down with USS Ingraham in North Atlantic, Aug. 22, 1942. Survived by his mother Mrs. Jack Schuler of Newell.

SCHUMANN, William P.--Corporal; killed in action in North Burma, June 22, 1944. Entered service Oct. 7, 1942. Survived by his wife, Mrs. Luella Sanders Schumann and daughter Patricia of Albert City, and his parents, M/M Laverne Schumann of Varina; also three brothers.

THELEN, David J.--Killed in action in France, July 21, 1944. Survived by parents, M/M J. M. Thelen of Linn Grove.

WARDLOW, Clarence--Corporal; died in Germany of wounds, Apr. 27, 1945. Survived by his wife of Sioux Rapids.

WILDER, Raymond LeRoy--killed in action in Okinawa invasion; resident of Storm Lake when inducted; survived by mother, Mrs. Gladys Rasmussen.

WILLARD, Virgil Curtis--Killed in plane crash at Shernya, Alaska Feb. 27, 1944. Survived by mother, Mrs. Jennie G. Willard of Sioux Rapids.

WELLS, John E.--Staff Sgt.; killed over France April 30, 1944. Survived by mother, Mrs. Bessie E. Wells, Storm Lake.
