NEHRING: Henry Nehring was born on April 2, 1852, at Lienburg, Hanover, Germany, and made his home there for many years. On June 13, 1874, he was united in marriage to Carolina Hueper, and for nine years following their marriage they lived at Lienburg. In 1883 he with his wife, three children and mother in law emigrated to America and settled in Sac county where they lived for six years on a farm. The family moved to Grant township in Buena Vista county in 1889, living in that locality for eighteen years. In 1907 they moved to Lincoln township where Mr. Nehring lived up to the time of his death. He had been in poor health of late and on Tuesday morning, March 8, he passes away. The funeral service was held at the Grant township evangelical church on Friday afternoon, March 11, and interment was in the church cemetery. He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, four sons and three daughters, one brother, one sister and twelve grandchildren. He was a kind father and loving husband and was greatly loved by his neighbors. The bereaved family have the sympathy of many friends in this county. (SL Pilot-Tribune, Mar. 18, 1921)


NITZKE: Alfred Ernest Nitzke, the seventh child of Mr. and Mrs. Chris H. Nitzke, was born Dec. 21, 1884 on Sec. 26 in Coon Twp., Buena Vista County, Iowa. He grew to manhood on his parents' farm and attended the local schools. He attended college in Charles City for two years, and then in 1907 he resumed his college work at Buena Vista College, completing a business course. He worked as a bookkeeper at his father's store in Storm Lake, and after the store was sold, accepted a position in the Farmers' Co-op in Varina, where he worked for several years. He resigned to go into farming on his own place nine miles northeast of Newell. He and Alma Ahntholz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ahntholz, were married on Feb. 3, 1921 and became the parents of two children, Everette, now age 4, and Norine, age 2. He had been suffering for two months from an unknown illness, finally diagnosed as appendicitis. He underwent surgery on January 27th, but the diseased had progressed to the point that it had compromised his physical strength and he succumbed the next day, Jan. 28th, 1926. He was preceded in death by his father. Besides his wife, children and aged mother, he is survived by five brother and four sisters: Mrs. Edward Hanke of Pocahontas Co.; Mrs. Will Ahntholz of Albert City; Sam Nitzke of San Rafael, Calif.; Louis Nitzke of Albert City; Edward Nitzke of Storm Lake; Mrs. H. F. Ahntholz of Albert City; Dr. Andrew Nitzke of Windom, Minnesota; Ben Nitzke of Davenport and Miss Lillian Nitzke of Storm Lake. Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheran church in Coon Twp., with burial in the adjoining cemetery. (abstract, Newell Mirror, Feb. 4, 1926)


NITZKE: Augusta A. "Gustie" Nitzke died Jan. 30, 1980 at a care center in Fort Dodge. Funeral services were Feb. 2 from the United Methodist Church of Newell, with interment in the Newell Cemetery. Augusta Amanda Porath was born near Newell on Aug. 24, 1884 to Charles Frederick Porath and Ulrika Louise Degner Porath. She attended the rural schools and was confirmed in the Methodist faith at the German Methodist church just west of Varina. She married John Louis Nitzke on Dec. 8, 1904 and they became the parents of two sons, Victor Louis and Julian Harold. Mr. Nitzke passed away on March 17, 1945. She was also preceded in death by her son, Victor, her daughter in law, Martha Nitzke, her parents, five sister and one brother. Surviving are her son Julian and his wife Beverly, and five grandchildren: Judith Kay Rase and her husband James of Dublin, Ireland and Douglas, Nancy, Cynthia and Patricia Nitzke all of Fort Dodge; also a great-grandson, Christopher James Rase of Warren, Ohio; also a sister, Agnes Porath, a brother, August Porath and his wife, all of Newell. NITZKE: Louis J. Nitzke died March 20, 1945 after a lengthy illness. Service were held March 20 from the Varina Methodist church, services in charge of the pastor, Leonard Rowse, and Rev. E. E. Witter of Storm Lake. Burial was in Newell Cemetery. Louis John Nitzke was born Dec. 3, 1878 at the farm home of his parents, Fredericka and Christopher Nitzke, and was a resident of this same farm at the time of his death. Mr. Nitzke and Augusta Porath were married Dec. 8, 1904, and their union was blessed with two sons, Victor Louis, who resides with his wife and child on the home place and Julian Harold, who is now somewhere in the South Pacific receiving officer's training. He was confirmed in and became a member of the Methodist church at age 14, and while his health allowed, served many capacities of leadership and responsibilities in his church home. Besides his wife and sons, he is survived by a granddaughter, Judith Kay; four sisters, Mrs. Edward Hanke of Varina, Mrs. Anna Ahntholz of Storm Lake, Mrs. Henry Ahntholz of Albert City and Mrs. Lillian Lumdsen of Cedar Rapids; four brothers, Sam of Sam Raphael, Calif., Edward and Dr. Andrew Nitzke of Storm Lake, and Dr. Ben Nitzke of Tacoma, Wash. NITZKE: Martha Nitzke, 50, died Tuesday, April 22, 1969, in Storm Lake. Funeral services were Friday, April 25, at 2:00 p.m. from the Baak Funeral Home in Newell. Interment was in the Newell Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers were Richard Larsen, George Wilson, Bill Hanke, Ted Lilly, Dean Burnett and Tom Renshaw. Martha Elizabeth Larsen was born September 20, 1918, in Winthrop, Minnesota, to John and Jennie Banks Larsen. She attended Winthrop schools until her family moved back to Newell in 1929. After she married Victor Nitzke, they farmed on the Nitzke home place in Coon Township until his death in 1961. She moved into Newell and lived there until her death. Martha and Vic were blessed with a daughter, Judy Kay. She is survived by a daughter, Judy Rase, of Warren, Ohio; her mother, Jennie Larsen, of Newell; her brothers, Vernon, of Albert City, and Edward, Kenneth and Charles, of Newell; her sisters, Mildred Ahntholz, of Albert City, Ione Jorgensen, of Newell, Lucille Reidy, of Poteau, Oklahoma, and Jeannette Cook, of Mare Island, California; as well as by many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, a sister, Irene, and a brother, Donald (abstract, Newell Mirror, 5-1-1969).


NITZKE: Victor Lewis "Vic" Nitzke died at his home in Coon Twp. on Oct. 6, 1961, after an illness lasting six months. He was born on the same farm, Oct. 22, 1906, the son of J. Louis and Augusta Porath Nitzke, He attended Varina schools, and on April 26, 1939, married Miss Martha Nitzke of Newell, at Humboldt. They became the parents of a daughter, Judith. Mr. Nitzke was preceded in death by his father, and is survived by his wife, his daughter and son in law, Judy and Jim Rase, his mother, and a brother Julian Nitzke, as well as many other relatives and friends. Services were held Oct. 9th at the First Methodist Church in Newell, and burial was in the Newell Cemetery. (abstract, Newell Mirror, Oct. 12, 1961)


OLIN: Gust Olin, an aged resident of Albert City, died at the home of his son Charles, on Tuesday, May 22. The funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran church by Rev. Oscar Benson and the remains laid to rest in the Fairfield cemetery. (SL Pilot-Tribune, June 1, 1917)


PEDERSEN: The little son of Mrs. and Mrs. A. C. Pedersen died Saturday, February 5, 1927, in a Fort Dodge hospital. He had undergone surgery for a mastoid infection and seemed to be recovering well but died early the next morning from a blood clot. James Anders was born March 25, 1925, and is survived by his parents, Anders and Agnes Christensen Pedersen. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Christensen, and his uncle, Clarence Christensen, accompanied him and his parents to the hospital. Funeral services were Monday afternoon at the Danish Lutheran church in Newell with burial in the Newell cemetery (abstract, Newell Mirror, 2-10-1927)


PEDERSEN: Mrs. Pearl Pedersen died July 4, 1961 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Ellrich, in Newell. Pearl Sena Pedersen was born April 2, 1900 in Alta to Golman and Elizabeth Christensen Davenport. After graduating from Alta High School in 1919, she went to Sioux City and trained as a nurse, graduating in 1923. After only two years in the profession, she became head supervisor of nurses at LeMars Hospital. She married Chresten J. Pedersen on Nov. 27, 1926 in Alta, and the couple went to Libertyville, Illinois. They remained at that place until 1933, and then came back to Buena Vista County, settling in Newell, where she and her husband lived the rest of their lives. She is survived by four children: Paul J. of Hull; James R. of Venice, Cal.; Mrs. Melvin Redig of Storm Lake and Mrs. William Ellrich; also, a brother, Golman Davenport of Humboldt and a sister, Mrs. Henry Mayo of Kansas City, Kansas. Services were at the Nain Lutheran Church, with burial in Newell Cemetery. (abstract, July 6, 1961, Newell Mirror)


PETERSON: Edward C. Peterson died at the home of his father, Anton Peterson, on Sunday, May 27, after an illness of about two years, during which time he suffered much. He was just at the threshold of young manhood and his death is much deplored. He leaves his parents, one sister and two brothers to mourn. The funeral was held from the late home on Tuesday afternoon and was conducted Rev. Hemmingsen of the Danish Baptist church in Elk Twp., and Rev. F. B. Nixon of the M. E. Church, interment being in the Scandinavian cemetery. (SL Pilot-Tribune, June 1, 1917)


REINEKING: Richard Reineking, 76, of Albert City, died April 7, 1988. He was born Dec. 26, 1911, to William and Louise Langemann Reineking in Buena Vista Co., near Varina. He attended Varina rural schools. On Dec. 16, 1935 he married Marjorie Lulu Burditt and they farmed on their Coon Twp. land. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Merrill. He is survived by his wife and three daughters: Janice Grell of Holstein, Jean Howard of Walnut Creek, Calif. and MariBeth Nissen of Sutherland; also a sister, Mabel Schufield of Albert City. Services were April 11 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City, with burial in the Coon Twp. Cemetery near Varina. (abstract, SL Pilot-Tribune, Apr. 13, 1988)


REINEKING: William A. F. Reineking was born Oct. 6th, 1870, at Lippe Detmold, Germany and died May 27th, 1923 at his home in Coon Twp., Buena Vista county, Iowa. He came to this country with his parents at the age of ten and lived with them north of Storm Lake. His parents were some of the first settlers there and braved the hardships of early pioneer life. Here the growing boys had their part in herding cattle on the unsettled prairies. Later his parents moved to Sac county and lived in Eden township. School facilities were better here because the country was more developed. In the Reformed church that was represented here he received instruction in the catechism and Bible truths and was confirmed in that faith, to which he adhered to his end. He was married March 7, 1894 to Louise Langemann, which union was blessed with eight children--William, Lena, Henry, Minnie, Fred, Ella, Richard and Mable. Mr. Reineking was thrifty and progressive. He stood for education, law and orders, good roads and various other improvements. He planned for the welfare of his family. He was in good health until about fifteen months ago when he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. On Saturday, May 26th, however, he felt quite well, called on some of his sick neighbors, went to town to attend to some business matters, but suffered another stroke the next morning and passed away peacefully. The funeral service was held from the home and the M.E. country church, services conducted by Rev. W. J. Loeck of Varina. Interment was made in the church cemetery. (Newell Mirror, June 7, 1923)


VANDERHEIDEN: Mrs. Frank Vanderheiden died Dec. 28, 1959 in Storm Lake after a long illness. Services were held Dec. 31, 1959 at St. Columkille Church in Varina, with burial in the church cemetery. Frances Antoinette Tesina was born Sept. 9, 1909 to Mr. and Mrs. John Tesina near Dwight, Neb. She married Francis Vanderheiden on Feb. 15, 1933 and they were blessed with four children, who, besides her husband, survive her: Mary (Mrs. Joe Chase) of Omaha, John of Ames, and Frank and Anne of the home; also her parents of Bee, Neb., and three sisters and two brothers. WELCH: The family of T. H. Welch suffered additional bereavement Monday evening in the death of their boy, Wayne, from scarlet fever, which caused the death of their little daughter Dora but two weeks before. This sadly afflicted family certainly have the sympathy of the entire community. Their other children have fully recovered and no cases have developed in other families. WIRKUS: Cecil Wirkus, 58, of Ames, died Jan. 1 following a lingering illness at a Nevada hospital. Mr. Wirkus was born June 10, 1911 at Storm Lake to Herman and Charlotte (Porath) Wirkus. He graduated from Varina High School in 1928 and in 1935 married Naomi Larsen at Fonda. He was a member of the Methodist church at Varina. He is survived by his wife, a son, Benton, of Ames, two grandchildren and his mother, of Newell. Burial was in Cedar Cemetery. (abstract, Fonda Times, Jan. 8, 1970)


WIRKUS: Charlotte Wirkus died Oct. 24, 1970 at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell, where she had been a resident for the past two years. Services were Oct. 26 from the United Methodist Church in Varina, with interment in the Varina Cemetery. Charlotte Louise Porath was born May 10, 1887 on the farm home of her parents, Charles and Ulrika Porath. She attended the rural schools and attended Charles City College for two years. She married Herman Robert Wirkus on Feb. 2, 1909 at the Methodist parsonage in Storm Lake, and they were blessed with two sons, Bernard Carlton and Cecil Denton. After residing for a few years on a farm near Storm Lake, in 1915 they moved to Newell Twp. where they made their home and raised their sons. Mr. Wirkus died Jan. 5, 1943 and five years later Mrs. Wirkus retired from the farm and moved to Varina. She suffered a paralytic stroke and entered the Good Samaritan home in January, 1968. Mrs. Wirkus was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Cecil, her parents, three sisters and a brother. She is survived by her son, Bernard, of Manson; two daughters in law, Ruth Wirkus of Manson and Naomi Wirkus of Ames; two grandchildren, Denton Wirkus of Ames and Carol Flaherty of Pocahontas; also three sisters, Mrs. Augusta Nitzke, Mrs. Minnie Peterson and Miss Agnes Porath, a borther, August Porath and a sister in law, Tena Porath, all of Newell.
