Notes:
  • Jacob Straley Jr., at age 15 or 16, along with his brother, Andrew, served in the Lynchburg VA Home Guard Reserves during the Revolutionary War (and is shown on governmental records among those who served in the Colonial Wars). After the War, Jacob Jr. became a brick mason. He was primarily a landowner and farmer. Tax rolls show Jacob paying taxes in Wythe and Grayson counties in 1795 (in 1806, these became part of Giles Co.)

In about 1782, he moved west across the Allegheny Mountains to the New River Valley in the area that is now Giles County (was Montgomery Co). It is there that he established a homestead (2000 acres or more) and married Martha FRENCH. They built a home in the Green Valley located at Whitley's and Bear Spring's branch of Walker's Creek. This southwestern Virginia valley is set in the shadow of Buckeye Mountain and the New River Alleghenies.

In 1789, Jacob was taxed taxed $5.61 for four tithes (age 16 & under), four slaves, seven horses, and 32 cattle. In 1790, personal property tax rolls in Montgomery Co. (Giles) show Jacob with 45 acres adjacent to land he lived on, and T. Copley's land on Meadow Creek of the New River. Jacob's residence location in 1790 is shown at Whitleys and Bear Spring Branch of Walker's Creek (Green Valley).

In 1810, for Jacob's service during the Colonial Revolutionary War, the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia granted him 49 acres, located on the west side of New River on Rich Hill. The Giles County census of 1810 lists Jacob with five slaves.

In the 1815 Giles County Deed Book, Jacob deeded his sons John & Charles 102 acres located on the north side of Buckeye Mountain. Also that year, Jacob paid taxes on four slaves, 32 head of cattle, and seven horses.

  • The old house that Jacob and Martha lived in still stands and is owned by STRALEY descendants near Eggleston, Giles County, VA.

  • It is thought that all Southern STRALEY branches descend from Jacob STRALEY II.
