List of documents to be found :
1. Capt. Benjamin Clement's Bible
Last known whereabouts:
In the possession of the J. R. Orr family of Chicago, Ill (1927)
Hearsay from Katie Clement McMurray of FL (circa 1970's)-- Maude Carter Clement tried several times to purchase the Bible form the Orr family. Supposedly the Bible was donated to "a library" in Chicago.
In the 1970's I wrote to the following libraries:
- Chicago Public Library, main branch
- University of Chicago
- Newberry Library
- Chicago Historical Society
2. The original article/photo published in the Sunday Chicago Tribune that led to Maude C. Clement contact with the Orr family. Wynn's Southern Lineages states she made contact with the family in 1927 - so the article was published no later than 1927.
3. The deposition of Benjamin Clement of Montgomery Co. (1780) where he gave testimony about his service in the French & Indian War. Known to have existed in the 1950's when it was mentioned in a one-line statement in Kegley's Virginia Frontier : the beginning of the Southwest. The document was in the Virginia Land Office at that time.
I have had several searches made of the VA State Library (which now has custody of the VA Land Office Records) over the past 30 years, but not since they moved to their new building.
