Clark County Tax Lists
Clark County Tax Lists, 1794, 1795, 1797, 1799, 1800, 1802, 1805

Tax lists of the succeeding years are shown to the right. The first year shown, 1794, had only a single page and did not detail the acreage owned. From 1795 on, however, the list contained two full pages. In the interest of space, only the last year, 1805, is shown in its entirety.

It should be noted that there were two Richard Bells in the 1794 tax list. This might appear to be a point of confusion, but the second Richard apparently moved from Clark County after 1794.

The page shown here for 1795 has Leonard only. The reason Zachariah and Richard were not in this section is not clear. However, it is clear that Leonard had 150 acres of land in 1795.

The tax list for 1796 was very faint, difficult to read and was not copied, but by 1797, Leonard had only 100 acres and Richard had the remaining 50.

There is no existing tax list for the year 1798. But in 1799 Richard was not on the list, and in his place was Margaret with apparently the same piece of land. The number of acres is not very clear, but in 1800 and in 1802, the amount of acreage is clearer.

By 1805, Leonard had disappeared from the list. However it will be noted that on the second page, the land possessed by Margaret was entered by Walter Chiles, surveyed by Walter Chiles and patented by Leonard Bell [Beall].

Notes:
Subsequent years when Zachariah and Rezin acquired land are not shown here in the interest of space. Also, it should be noted that Edward was consistently shown in a separate section of the tax list. The first year he appeared was not captured and pages on which he appeared in 1808 and 1809 are not shown in the interest of space.
