Assuming that the Alexander Beall of Prince George's County, Maryland, is the son of Alexander Bell of St Andrews, Scotland, his Baptism is registered in parish register of St. Andrews Parochial Parish, St. Andrews, Fife County, Scotland, October 11, 1649. While this seems possible, it has not been established that the two are one and the same.

The first mention of Alexander Beall (Allexander Beale) in the records of Maryland was his name as a witness to the will of Lawrence Rowland in the county of Calvert on December 26, 1694. Alexander was the only one of those signing who could write his name. (Ref. The Brooke Beall family and the Johns family, by Eleonor Mildred Vaughn Cook.) That Alexander was literate may be an indication that he was an imigrant as postulated.

Probate of Alexander's will was on September 05, 1744, at Prince George's County, Maryland. His will is at the Hall of Records in Annapolis (Box, folder 45). It is dated January 1743 (1744 by our calendar). It does not mention his wife indicating that she died prior to 1743. After specific bequeaths, he left the remainder of his estate as follows: 1/5 the children of son, James (deceased), 1/5 to the children of son, John (deceased), 1/5 to son, William, 1/5 to son, Ninian, and 1/5 to son-in-law, John Jackson, the husband of Ruth.

Notes for Elizabeth Coombes/Elizabeth Buckerfield:

It appears that Alexander must have married at least twice. Evidence presented by Donna Russell in "The Maternal Ancestry of Mary Bates, wife of Lingan Wilson of Prince George's County, Maryland," in The American Genealogist, Vol 68-2, pp 72-76, has establish that Alexander was married to Elizabeth Buckerfield-Bates-Beall (daughter of Henry Buckerfield and Elizabeth Parker-Buckerfield-Holdsworth-Hepburn). However, Elizabeth Buckerfield could not possibly have been the mother of Alexander's children because she was married to William Bates in England between 1698 and 1707.

Elizabeth Buckerfield was the mother of Mary Bates, wife of Lingan Willson--who Alexander mentioned in his will. As a result of this mention in Alexander's will, some have speculated that Mary may have been his daughter. However, evidence developed by Russell establishes that Mary was the daughter of William Bates and Elizabeth Buckerfield.

As for Alexander's first wife, there is speculation that she may have been Elizabeth Coombes, as proposed by Fielder M. M. Beall. There is nothing in the primary record to confirm the marriage of Alexander to Elizabeth Coombes, but following that speculation only, Elizabeth Coombes is herein listed as the mother of Alexander's children.

However, in his will, Alexander, gave his wearing apparel to his "brother," Robert, and Alexander's son, James, in a deed to John Beall, the son of Robert Beall, referred to John as the "son of my Uncle Robert," (Prince George's County Deeds, M, f.336) contained in, The Brooke Beall family and the Johns family, by Eleonor Mildred Vaughn Cook.)

Therefore, on the supposition that Alexander Bell and Margaret Ramsay were the parents of Alexander and James of Prince George's County, Maryland, they must have been the parents of Robert also.

On March 30, 1756, William's will was probated (Ref. Frederick County, Md. Wills, Libra 30, folio 71). It named his wife, Elizabeth, sons: Alexander, Richard, and William, and daughters: Margarett Beale (wife of Andrew Beale), Elizabeth Harding (wife of Elias Harding) and Jemima.

He named his wife, Elizabeth, and his son, Alexander, his executrix & executor. He gave to his daughter, Margaret Beale, wife of Andrew Beale, a tract of land called Discontent containing one hundred & ten acres which had been given given to her long ago, but not conveyed. Also, he gave to his son, Richard Beall, part of a Tract of Land called, Fatt Oxen, containing fifty acres which was given many years ago but not conveyed.

To his wife, Elizabeth, he gave the residue of his Estate, but mentioned his desire that she should within two years after his decease, pay unto his Son, William Beall, as much money as was needed to procure him an hundred acres of Land, & after her Decease then the Remainder of the Estate to be equally divided between his Daughters, Jemima Beall, Elizabeth Harding & his son, William Beall.

In his will (Probated, May 5th, 1759, Ref. Frederick County, Md. Wills, Liber A No. 1, folio 127), Alexander Beall gave his son, Leonard, the Tract or parcel of land called Fyffe (The Forest). To his daughter, Sarah, the Tract of Land in the occupation of Elizabeth Harding, containing eighty four acres. To his son, William Magruder, the tract of Land called, King Cole, but with the stipulation that if he should die without Lawful Heirs, the Tract of Land was to be sold and the money to be equally divided between his Daughters, Sabrina, Mary and Martha.

To his son, Edward, he gave the Tract of Land called, Joval Ramble, and also one other Tract of Land Called, Jacobs Cowpen, but with the stipulation that if Edward, was to die before he arrive at the age of twenty-one years or have lawful Heirs, that the tracts of Land were to be sold and the money equally divided between his Daughters, Sabrina, Mary and Martha. Also to his son, Edward, all my other Lands that he had any Right, Title or Interest to, except what Lands he had right to by his Wife, Sarah. Also excepted was a Tract of Land that he had sold by a verbal agreement to George Ross.

He also gave each of the following children, William Magruder, Elizabeth, Sarah, Edward, Sabrina, Mary, and Martha, the sum of twenty pounds currency, each to be paid to them as they respectively arrive at Age or marry, but if any of the said Children should die before they arrive at Age or marry, that the respective Sum or Sums of money were to be given to his wife, Sarah.

Finally, he gave his wife, Sarah, all the Remainder of his real and personable estate which he received with her or had any Right, Title of Interest to, by marrying her.

Notes for Elizabeth Harding:

While Fielder M. M. Beall has Sarah Magruder as the first wife of Captain Alexander Beall, and Elizabeth Heterick proposed Sarah Edmonston, Nancy Lesure has since established that his first wife was Elizabeth Harding, daughter of John Harding and wife Elizabeth.

At the time of Alexander's death in 1759, he willed to his daughter Sarah "that tract of land now in the occupation of Elizabeth Harde containing 84 acres. Also, this same Elizabeth Harde in her own will, 1768/1769, made a bequeath to unnamed grandchildren who were "sons and daughters of Alexander Beall and my daughter Elizabeth." (Ref, Nancy Lesure, "Sarah Beall and Lawrence Owen: A Marriage proven by Land Records.)

Elizabeth Harding-Beall was a sister of Elias Harding who married Alexander's sister, Elizabeth Beall-Harding. Her Baptism was October 28, 1713, St Barnabas, Leeland, Queen Annes Parish, of the Episcopal Parishes of Prince George's County Maryland.

Notes for Leonard Beall:

In Captain Alexander Beall's will, April 9, 1759-May 5, 1759, Eldest Son Leonard inherited tract "Forrest" whereon he now lives. Book A1 Page 127, Fredrick County, Maryland. The land he inherited totaled 259½ acres.

(He also must have somehow obtained "Refuse," not mentioned specifically in Alexander's will, based on his sale of it in 1763. Alternately, it is possible, as has been speculated, that he sold it on behalf of his younger brother, Edward, who inherited lands "not otherwise devised." Refuse was comprised of 84 acres.)

Known land records involving Leonard Beall in Maryland are as follows:

August 25, 1763, Deed, Leonard Beall to William Thrasher, 84 acre tract called "Refuse" for 3500 lbs of tobacco. Eleanor, wife of Leonard, waived dower. Book H, Page 592, Land Office Fredrick County, MD.

September 22, 1763, Deed, Leonard Beall to Charles Blackmore, 100 acre tract of land called "The Forest." Eleanor, wife of Leonard, waived dower. Book H Page 620, Land Office, Fredrick County, MD

January 21, 1772, Deed of partition of "Forrest" between Andrew Heugh of Frederick County and Leonard Beall, eldest lawful son and devisee of the late Captain Alexander Beall, Book M, Page 632, Land Office, Frederick County MD.

January 22, 1772, Deed Leonard Beall to Elias Harding, part of tract called "Forrest" for 138 lbs. 8 shillings and 9 pence. Eleanor, wife of Leonard, waived dower. Book N, Page 668, Land Office, Frederick County, MD

Note: Montgomery County was created in 1776 from Frederick County, which had been created from parts of Baltimore and Prince George's Counties in 1748. Prince George's had been created from Calvert and Charles counties in 1695. Leonard lived in a portion of Frederick County that became Montgomery County in 1776.

Sometime between 1884 and 1889, however, Leonard and family moved to Fayette County, Virginia (now Clark County Kentucky), where he patented 150 acres about 8 miles east of Winchester, Kentucky, on Stoner Creek.

According to the survey for the land, it was about one mile below the Daniel Boone settlement on the same creek. The land was acquired in the following manner: Three warrants were acquired by a Thomas Jones for his service in the French and Indian war. Jones transferred his warrants to Walter Chiles who filed the entry in 1880 and had the land surveyed in 1884. The survey was then assigned to Leonard Beall, probably in 1888, by Walter Carr, attorney for Walter Chiles for an undisclosed sum. (Leonard first appeared on the Fayette County, Virginia tax list in 1889.) Leonard then took possession of the land and got the grant.

Clark County tax records show that Leonard's son, Richard, acquired 50 of those acres between 1795 and 1797. In the 1795 tax list, Leonard is shown with 150 acres. In 1797, Leonard is shown with only 100 acres and Richard is shown with the remaining 50. Leonard sold the remainder of his 100 acres to William Frame in 1803 (Ref. Kentucky Land and Property Deeds, Book 5, Page 169-170 and Book 5, Pages 255-257).

Also in 1803, Leonard was appointed guardian of Alexander and Tabitha, "infant Orphans of Richard Bell Deceased." per Clark County, Kentucky Order Book 3, Page 237. Richard was a son of Leonard and Eleanor not previously known. (After Leonard died, Margaret, the mother of the children, was appointed guardian in May 1804, per Order Book 3, Page 301.)

Notes for Eleanor Magruder:

In a listing obtained from Daughters of the American Revolution, Eleanor was born in 1733, married Leonard in 1759 and died after 1789. This would indicate that she died in what is now Clark County, Kentucky.

Children of Eleanor Magruder and Leonard Beall are:

50. Zachariah Hardin⁶ Beall (Leonard⁵, Alexander⁴, William³, Alexander², Alexander¹ Bell) was born 1761 in Montgomery County, Maryland, and died October 09, 1826 in Scott County, Illinois. He married Nancy Ann Evans May 15, 1794 in Clark Co. Kentucky, daughter of Richard Evans and Mary Mabery.

Notes for Zachariah Hardin Beall:

According to DAR documents, Zachariah H. Beall was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, serving as a Private - 6th Co. under Capt Aaron Harris, Montgomery County, Maryland 1780.

He moved to Kentucky prior to 1789 with his father, his mother and his brothers. He and his wife, Nancy had seven children which he was left to raise alone after she died in 1807. It is said that he lived on Stoner Creek west of Winchester, Near Goshen Church, in Kentucky. This probably refers to the 71 acre farm he bought from James Evans in 1813 and which he sold to James Pace in 1825.

After his children were grown, he moved to Morgan (now Scott) County, Illinois, with two of his younger sons, Richard and Thomas, and probably his youngest daughter, Susannah. He patented [purchased from the government] three parcels of land in Illinois totaling 388 acres. He died a year later on October 9, 1826.

Note: According to DAR, he is buried on the farm in Clark County, Kentucky, that he sold to James Pace in 1825. A record copy of an application for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution by a descendent of Mary Polly Beall-Flynn, daughter of Zachariah Harding Beall, gave the location of his burial as Scott County, Illinois---which would seem reasonable in view of his acqisition of land in Illinois as noted above. However, a note by the DAR examinor on the application insisted that he was buried on the Pace farm.

Alternately, according to several articles which were reprinted in the CLARK COUNTY CHRONICLES "Conducted and Collaborated by the Clark County Historical Society" beginning May 31, 1923, "The father of the late Leonard Beall, of Kiddville, is also buried in [Bethlehem Church Graveyard]." According to the articles, the graveyard is" situated on a dividing ridge between the Kentucky and Licking Rivers, a short distance south of the church building."

However, this seems unlikely too. He had undoubtedly entered the land in Illinois two or three years earlier and then had to travel to Clark County, Kentucky, in September of 1825 to sell his farm in Kentucky to James Pace. He obviously returned to Illinois since he sold 80 acres of his land in Illinois in June of 1826. It is hard to believe that Zachariah would return from Kentucky sometime before June of 1826 and then again immediately leave his home in Illinois to return to Kentucky prior to his death. Thus it appears likely that he died and was buried somewhere in Scott County, Illinois.

Based on land documents to settle Zachariah Hardin Beall's estate in Morgan Co., IL in Oct 1826, the following heirs were mentioned: Polly Flynn & husband Michael; Leonard Beall; Eleanor Hazlerigg and husband Charles; Richard Beall & wife Jemima Elledge; Susannah Beall; Thomas Beall (who was administrator of estate) & wife Catharine Hunter, and Elizabeth Wheeler & husband Alexander.

In the 1810 census, in Zachariah's household, there were two males less than 10 years of age (Richard and Thomas), one male 10 but less than 16 (Leonard), one male 45 or greater (Zachariah), two females less than 10 (Susannah and Elizabeth), and two females 10 but less than 16 (Polly and Eleanor). Zachariah was not found in the 1820 census, but tax records place him in Clark County, Kentucky, until at least 1824. In 1824, his taxable property was 71 acres of land and 7 horses.

Children of Zachariah Beall and Nancy Evans are:

Notes for Richard Beall:

Richard (along with Zachariah, Edward and Reason/Rezin), was a son of Leonard Beall and Eleanor Magruder. Richard was married to Margaret and had at least two children, Alexander and Tabitha.

This conclusion is based mainly on an 1804 deed transfer listing Margaret as an heir of Leonard plus prior tax records showing that she acqired the land from Richard. In addition, there is the War of 1812 pension affidavit by Leonard Beall (son of Zachariah) in which Leonard (son of Zachariah) stated that he and Alexander were first cousins and that their fathers were brothers.

Clark County tax records show that Richard acquired 50 acres from Leonard sometime between 1795 and 1797. In the 1795 tax list, Leonard is shown with 150 acres. In 1797, Leonard is shown with 100 acres and Richard is shown with the remaining 50.

In the 1799 tax list, Richard can not be found, and in his place Margaret is listed with the 50 acres. By 1805, Leonard also has disappeared from the list, but Margaret still has her 50 acres and if one views the tax list for 1805, it will be noted that the land she had in 1804 was entered by Walter Chiles, surveyed by Walter Chiles and patented by Leonard Bell. Thus it is established that the land she acquired from Richard originally came from Leonard.

It is established also that Richard was the father of Alexander and Tabitha because of the guardianship order giving Leonard guardianship of Alexander and Tabitha because the order speaks of Alexander and Tabitha as the "infant Orphans of Richard Bell Deceased." Ref. Clark County, Kentucky Order Book 3, Page 237.

Note that Rebecca Beall is listed below as a daughter of Richard and Margaret. This has not been confirmed by any primary record. However, she was married in Clark County, Kentucky, and presumably lived there prior to her marriage. However, she could not possibly have been a daughter of Leonard and Eleanor, nor could she have been a daughter of Zachariah, nor Edward, nor Rezin. A search of tax records does not appear to provide any other possibility for her parentage.

Notes for Richard Beall:

Richard Beall was born February 3, 1800, in Clark County, Kentucky and migrated to Morgan (now Scott) County, Illinois, sometime in the early to mid-1820s, probably with his father, Zachariah, and/or his brother, Thomas.

He married Jemima Elledge in Morgan County, Illinois, on March 7, 1827. Three years later, he sold two pieces of land he had owned less than two years and he and Jemima moved to Pike County where he patented [purchased land from the government for $1.25 an acre] 160 acres of land in section 26 of Griggsville township. Ten years later, in January of 1840, he sold this land for $2,500.00 and, apparently, used the money to buy property in Griggsville to build a public house and tavern.

In the 1850 census, he and his family were living in the public house of which he was the proprietor. He listed his occupation as tavern keeper and net worth at $3,200.00. A number of other people also appear to have been living there on a more or less permanent basis including one of his married daughters, her husband and child, a couple of farmers, a tailor, a carpenter, an attorney with wife and child, and a teacher.

One of the more interesting things about Richard was the number of land transaction in which he was involved. Between 1830 and 1855 in Pike County, Illinois, Richard was involved in at least 20 land transactions, either buying or selling. It appears that he was a farmer until 1840 when he built the public house and tavern. Presumably, after 1840, he rented out his farms. However, he apparently didn't keep it very long. In 1852, according to his obituary, He joined the [Baptist] church in Griggsville, and, presumably, gave up his tavern. About four years later, he moved to Madison County, Iowa, where, also according to the obituary, he was a pillar of the church.

Richard died in 1884 at the age of 84, and is buried in the Winterset, Iowa, cemetery next to his wife, Jemima, with whom he shares a stone.

Notes for Jemima Elledge:

According to Jess Thompson, Jemima was the daughter of Edward (Neddie) Elledge and Malinda Scholl and was named for Daniel Boone's daughter, Jamima.

However, the Edward Elledge who was the son of Francis Elledge and Charity Boone, and married Malinda Scholl appears to have been born in 1791. Since Jemima was born in 1802, that seems highly unlikely, even impossible.

An alternate suggestion is that she was the daughter of Francis Elledge and Charity Boone, in which case she would have been Neddie's brother.
