Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic  Pioneer Cemetery

Here are the pictures of Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic  Pioneer Cemetery  on the 4th Line of Nottawasaga twp.  Simcoe Co.

A Little History:
On the 4th and 5th concessions from lot 12 to lot 22 there settled a number of sons and daughters of the Emerald Island.  These brave pioneers were among the first settlers in Nottawasaga twp. , many of them arriving in the thirties.  Like all good citizens, they refused to neglect their religious duties and education for  their families.  These devoted Catholics under the leadership of Joseph Bertles, Edmond Duggan, Matthew Dowling, and a mechanic Mr. Patrick McKeown soon had a little church built on Lot 13, concession 5.  They also built a school to educate their children.  There still remains on this ground the silent modest and engraved tomb stones marking the last resting places of these brave men and women.  Many children were buried in this 4th line cemetery, their deaths due to an epidemic that broke out in the early 1890's.  The cemetery can be seen today, on the west side of the 4th Line, just as you are about to look over the lovely site of Creemore.

Saint Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery

Located on Highway 91, Stayner.

As the pioneer cemetery proved to be too wet for burial purposes in spite of it being on high ground, it was abandoned, in favour of a better site.  This site was chosen on land donated by Edward Condlon on Highway 91.  This cemetery was blessed Oct. 13, 1877 by Archbishop Lynch and is still in use today.
