He was the sixth of eleven children. See sketch. His name was pronounced "Coonrod."

He was born near Pennsylvania and grew up in a German-speaking home. He went to Medical colle ge at Philadelphia and practiced medicine in Somerset County, PA. Impessed with reports fro m the Illinois country, he travelled to Kaskaskia in 1813, bought cattle and drove them bac k to PA for profit. He then closed his business in PA and moved for a short while to Kaskaski a, then moved to the north side of the Big Muddy River, about three miles west of where Murph ysboro would later be established, where a salt spring was located. He returned to Pittsburg h and bought thirty large cast-iron kettles to be used for boiling the water from the salt sp ring in order to manufacture salt. The salt content from the spring was low, and the busines s venture was unsuccessful. He was highly regarded by the local settlers, however. Besides be ing a physician, he operated a tanyard, a gristmill and sawmill on Big Kinkaid Creek, and kep t a general store.

On a Saturday in the late summer of 1815, Dr. Conrad Will and Capt. William Boon called a mee ting of local settlers to propose a petition for forming a new county in Illinois. The count y name was decided upon by vote - Jackson County - in honor of Andrew Jackson.

The meeting was held at the Salt Spring of the Big Muddy River, where Dr. Conrad Will had set tled the previous year for the purpose of manufacturing salt. He was a low, heavy-set man o f florid complexion; he had 'sandy' hair and blue eyes. He wore 'store' clothes, while most o f the men wore moccasins, buckskin breeches, home-spun shirts, and wore coonskin or wildcat c aps.

On 18 Apr 1818, Congress passed a bill admitting Illinois as a state into the Federal Union . Conrad Will attended the convention in Kaskaskia in July, 1818 and helped draft the first c onstitution of the state of Illinois. He served as State Senator or as Representative the fol lowing years:
State Senator: 1818-19, 1829-30, 1831-32, 1833-34

bullet Johannes WILL(9) was born on 8 May 1748 in Windsor Twp., Berks, PA. He died in Sep 1793 in , LINCOLN, NC. from notes by Katheryn Haddad:

In 1766 Johanne's parents moved from Berks County, Pennsylvania, to Tryon County, North Carol ina, later to become Lincoln County, and still later to become Gaston County. Johanne was 1 8 years old and strong enough to help with the horses and wagons on the long 600-mile journe y over mountains and rivers and through dense forests. In late 1773 when Johanne was 25 yea rs old, his father Gerhardt gave him147 acres "for love and affection" lying on both sides o f Leepers Creek, a tributary of the Catawba River. He must have spent most of his time cleari ng his land for he did not marry until he was about 30. His father only owned the last abou t a year, so probably it had never been cleared for crops. This land can be seen on the grave l Alexis-Lucia Road in Stanley, NC. I visited there in 1990 and walked part of it. It has no t been subdivided. I saw the pile of rocks that was put in place over two hundred years ago t o mark one corner of this land. There is a survey stake in the middle of the rocks. This lan d is currently back in the name of the Armstrongs, descendants of those who sold it to Gerhar dt Wills 250 years earlier. In 1775, Johanne bought 228 more acres from Andrew Hampton, no w giving him 375 acres. The following year, the War of Independence began. Johanne signed u p to fight in the Patriot Army. A single pay record has been found for him. Lord Cornwallis t ook over the house of Jacob Forney who had sold Gerhardt his original land, turning it int o a headquarters, and taking his cattle, food and anything else he wanted. He allowed Jacob a nd his wife to live in the cellar. General Greene was in the area too, trying to defeat Cornw allis' troops. Perhaps two years into the war when there was a lull in his part of the coun try, he went back to Berks County, Pennsylvania to visit his brother, Daniel, who had moved b ack there. And while there he ran into a childhood friend, Catharine who had now matured int o an attractive woman. She was only nine years old when he had moved away. Considering the ag e of his first-born, Johanne must have married about 1778 when he was thirty and she was 21 . For generations, researchers have searched through North Carolina records for Catharine's m aiden name, but with absolutely no success. I believe she was Catharine Riegelman as I explai n in her notes. Parents: Johann Gerhardt WILL and Maria Barbara DRACH .
