(A PARTIAL LIST)
There are two Clinton families that settled in the early years of America. One family settled in what is now New York state. This family started with Charles Clinton, who emigrated from Ireland in 1729. There is no information on the Charles Clinton family at this site.
The Clinton family of Connecticut are descendants of Lawrence Clinton, who appeared in Ipswich, MA about 1665. He is thought to be from England, although his home there has not been verified to our knowledge.
If the two families are related, it goes way back in history in the British Isles.
Clinton is an Anglo-Norman surname derived from the name of at least two English villages called
'Glympton' (meaning 'bright stream' or 'running stream') which in Norman were called 'Glintone'.
There are Glympton villages in Northampshire and Oxfordshire.
