MEANING OF THE NAME SMITH

The most common of all surnames, it was applied to artificers in wood and metal, all mechanical workers. Among Highlands of Scotland, Smith ranked third in dignity to chief from his skill in fabricating military weapons and dexterity in teaching use of them.

The parents of Lois (Smith) Clinton were: Asa Smith and Sarah Thompson. Asa Smith was born about 1727 and died 23 Sept 1782 and is buried in the Congregational Graveyard in West Haven. Sarah Thompson was born 15 Apr 1731 in CT and died 1746. Asa and Sarah were 1st Cousins 1 time removed.

The parents of Sarah Thompson were Stephen Thompson and Elizabeth Humphreville. Stephen was born 3 Dec 1705 in CT and died 1746 in West Haven, CT. On 4 Sept 1728 he married Elizabeth Humphreville. She was born in CT on 27 Oct 1708, daughter of Samuel Humphreville and Experience Pinion. Elizabeth Humphreville Thompson died on 7 Oct 1761 in West Haven. The names "Umberfield" and "Umberville" have been used by some Humphreville descendants.
