     Johann Clemens Macke was born in March 1839 in Biene, Lingen, Hanover, Germany.2,3 He was the son of Johann Leonard Macke and Galena (--?--).1 He was the, son of Johann Leonard Macke and Galena (--?--).1 He followed German naming customs and went by the name of Clemen(s).4 He was christened on 4 March 1858 at St. Bonifacii Parochie, in Biene.1 He came to the United States of America during 1859.5
          Clemens, age He was enumerated in the household of Hnery and Mary Lum, was enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Also enumerated in this household 23.6 Johann Clemens worked as a cooper.6 Follow the link to see the census image. Johann Clemens Macke served in the 1st Light Art'y Regiment, Ohio sometime between 1861 and 1865. His pension file index card lists his unit as "C1 U.S. Veteran, Vol. Engrs."4
          Johann Clemens married Elisabeth Voll, daughter of Casper Voll and Mary (--?--), on 22 November 1864.7 They had at least 9 children. The names of the known children are Johann, Johann, Maria and Bernard.8 He became a naturalized citizen on 8 October 1866 in Hamilton County, Ohio.           Clemens, age 30, and Elisabeth, age 27, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census in Cincinnati. Also enumerated in this household was Elisabeth's father, Casper Voll, aged 61.11 Clemens worked as a cooper.11 Follow the link to see the census image.
          Clemens, age 41, and Elisabeth, age 37, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census at 526 East Main Street in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Clemens (age 9), George (age 3), and Elizabeth (age 1).12 Johann Clemens worked as a cooper.12 Follow the link to see the census image. Johann Clemens applied for a military pension on 4 August 1888 with the class of "invalid."
          I have been able to find what I think is this family on the 1900 census but Clemens' name is given as Bernard. All the birth information and other names match with the rest of his family. Clemens, age 61, and Elisabeth, age 57, were enumerated on the 1900 Federal Census at 577 Woodward in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Elizabeth (age 20) and William (age 18). They rent their house.5 Clemens worked as a cooper.
