     John S. Quiggle was born in July 1838 in Clinton County, Pennsylvania.1,2,3,4 He was the son of William Quiggle and Ann (?).5 In 1850, John moved with his parents to Stevenson County, Illinois.5 In 1861, John moved with his parents to Hardin County, Iowa.5 John served in the military beginning 13 July 1862. He was 23 years old. "[H]e enlisted in Company A, 32d Iowa, and served until the close of the conflict. He took part in six hard-fought battles, besides numerous skirmishes; was twice wounded; once in the right hand, losing two fingers, and once in the abdomen."           John married Jane Milslagel, daughter of Andrew Milslagel and Sarah Keith, in 1866. He was about 30 and she was about 24.8,9,10 They had 5 children. Only two children's names are known. These children are Jacob H., Anna E. and Ella M.. John applied for a military pension on 3 December 1867 with the class of "invalid". He was granted certificate #89,691.11 John S. Quiggle file
          John, age 32, and Jane, age 34, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census for the Eldora Post Office in Jackson Township, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household was their son, Jacob (age 2). There were other children living in the household (relationships unknown, not entered into this database) H. (age 1), Hester E. (age 13), and William F. (age 9) Lloyd. Abner Williams (age 17) was a hired hand that also lived in this household.12 John worked as a tanner.           John, age 41, and Jane, age 33 (I think this should be 43), were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Jackson, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Jacob (age 12) and Anna (age 8). Also Jane's grandnephew, Samuel Adelbert Millslagle, age 5, is living with them.13 John worked as a farmer.13 Follow the link to see the census image.           John, age 61, and Jane, age 56, were enumerated on the 1900 Federal Census in Ackley, Hardin County, Iowa.
