Theodorus Bailey Northrup

     Theodorus Bailey Northrup was born on 26 April 1797 in Washington, Dutchess County, New York.¹ He was the son of John Northrup and Mary Gould.¹ He may have been enumerated on the 1810 census for Washington in the household of his father as a male aged from ten to sixteen years old.² Follow the link to see the census image.
     Theodorus must have been quite a character. He was a wanderer; living in at least New York, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Tennessee. He had 5 wives, 4 of which I know their names. These four wives bore him at least 14 children. I am interested in knowing if his other children remained with him each time he married. Below is a description of his life as I have been told. I am sure there is still much to discover about my complicated 4th great-grandfather.
          Theodorus married Betsey Hoag on 8 March 1822 in Dutchess County, New York.³ Theodorus and Betsey had 4 children. These children are Jane Amelia, Catherine, Jared Hoag and Homer David.⁴ Theodorus worked as a teacher. He taught for 52 terms [I believe that a term is what we call a semester so this means he taught for 26 years] in New York, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, and Minnesota.¹ Betsey died on 21 April 1830, leaving Theodorus a widower.³
          Theodorus married Sally Ann Pratt, daughter of Stephen Pratt (Junior) and Drusilla Loveland, circa 1830 in Middlefield, Otsego County, New York. He was about 33 and she was 17. It is his second marriage.¹ Theodorus and Sally had 4 children. These children are Mary Drusilla, Elizabeth Ann, John Nelson and Ophelia.¹ Sally died on 19 November 1837, leaving Theodorus a widower.¹
          Theodorus married Mrs. Amy (Jackson) Brewer.³ It is his third marriage; it is her second.³ Theodorus and Amy had 4 children. These children are Minerva, Theodorus, Sarah and Susan.⁵
           Between 1839 and 1845, Theodorus moved to Lafayette, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. NOTE: I am unable to find Lafayette, WI on the Tiger Server of the USGS to locate which county to look in.¹
           In 1845, Theodorus moved to Geneva Lake.⁶ In 1845, he moved to Columbia County, U.S.A.⁷ Theodorus then moved to Pottsville, Washington County, Iowa around 1850. According to Clyde Northrup, his wife, Amy, "refused to follow his waunderings." Based on his continued travels, I believe that he left and continued to wander. I do not know where she stayed or if they divorced. He does remarry but I do not have Amy's death date.³ circa 1856, Theodorus moved to Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota.³
          Theodorus married Mary Ann Harwood circa 1858.³ It is his fourth marriage.³ Theodorus and Mary had 2 children. These children are Henrietta and Lafayette.⁵
          Theodorus married _____ (?) (wife of Theodorus Northrup) circa 1864. This was his fifth marriage.³
          Theodorus, age 73, was enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census Alexandria Post Office in Riverdale, Douglas County, Minnesota. He was enumerated by himself. He works as a farmer. The land was valued at $250.⁸ Follow the link to see the census image. Theodorus died on 5 February 1877 in Elk Horn, Walworth County, Wisconsin.¹ He was 79 years old.
