John Cooper was born circa 1837 in Virginia.1 He was the son of Joel Cooper and Margaret (?).2 John, age 13, was enumerated in the household of his suspected grandmother, Mrs. Mary Cooper, on the 1850 Federal Census in District #24, Hampshire County, Virginia. I am guessing about the relationship between Mary (grandmother), Joel (son), Margaret (daughter-in-law) and John (grandson). They may all be Mary's children. This will need more work to straighten out. Mary lives next door to Elizabeth (Cooper) Milslagle who also lives near her brother-in-law, Abraham Milslagle.2 Follow the link to see the census image.
