Samuel Milslagel was born circa 1810 in Virginia.1,2,3 He was the son of Andrew Milslagel and _____ (?) (wife of Andrew Millslagel).4 He may have been enumerated on the 1810 census for Hampshire County, Virginia in the household of his father as a male aged from newborn to ten years old.5 Follow the link to see the census image. He may have been enumerated on the 1820 census for Noble Township, Morgan County, Ohio in the household of his father as a male aged from newborn to ten years old.6 Follow the link to see the census image. Andrew Millslagle, 1820 U.S. Census, Noble, Ohio, Morgan County, page (unknown page number), line #25, National Archives micropublication M33, roll 92, viewed on Ancestry.com July 2001. He may have been enumerated on the 1830 census for Noble Twp in the household of his father as a male aged twenty to thirty years old.7 Follow the link to see the census image. Andrew Milslagle, 1830 U.S. Census, Noble Township, Morgan County, Ohio, page 48, line #11, National Archives micropublication M19, roll 137, viewed on Ancestry.com September 2001.
Samuel married Julia Ackley, daughter of Daniel Ackley and Asenith (?), between 1832 and 1833 in Morgan County, Ohio.8 Samuel and Julia had at least 6 children. These children are Robert, Thomas, Asenath, Samuel Moses, Jackson and Andrew. I wonder if Jacob Millslagle is another child of Samuel and Julia (Ackley) Millslagle. Samuel and his second wife, Hannah, lived in Ohio and moved to Iowa. They are reported to have left some children behind in Ohio.
Samuel was enumerated on the 1840 census for Monroe County, Ohio as Samuel Millslagle, aged between 30 and 39. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: Julia, his wife, aged between 20 and 29; Jackson and Robert, aged newborn to five years old; Andrew, aged five to ten years old. I have not been able to identify these people that were also enumerated with him: one female aged between 5 and 9. Enumerated nearby are Andrew Millslagle (Samuel's father), Lewis Ackley, and Anson Wickham. This group moves toghether.9 Follow the link to see the census image. 1840 U.S. Census, Union Township, Monroe County, Ohio, page 79 Julia died in 1846, leaving Samuel a widower.10
Samuel married Hannah Wickham, daughter of (?) Wickham, circa 1848. He was about 36 and she was about 22.11 Samuel and Hannah had 8 children. These children are Julia Ann, J., Rachel Elizabeth, Carrie, Samuel Adelbert, Martha, William and Catharine.
Samuel, age 40, and Hannah, age 24, were enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in Pioneer Township, Cedar County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were several children: Andrew (age 15), Jackson (age 13), Robert (age 11), Thomas (age 8), Sena (age 6), Moses (age 4), and Julia A. (age 1). One child that is not enumerated with them that is living with them in 1860 is Jacob. He would be about 10. I wonder if he is not a son but a nephew or cousin. Samuel and Hannah are not able to read or write.12 Samuel worked as a farmer. I believe that Samuel may have not owned land because the entry on the 1850 census for value of real estate is blank.12 Follow the link to see the census image. Samuel Millslagel household, 1850 U.S. Census, Pioneer Township, Cedar County, Iowa, population schedule, page 124 (86), dwelling #625, family #625
Samuel, age 52, and Hannah, age 36, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Lithopolis, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were several children: Robert (age 20), Thomas (age 18), Asenath (age 16), Julia Ann (age 11), J. (male age 8), Rachel (age 5), Samuel Adelbert (age 3). Four of Samuel's children were not enumerated with him: Andrew (about 25 years old, probably born in Ohio), Jackson (about 23 years old , probably born in Ohio), Jacob (about 20 years old, probably born in Ohio), and Samuel Moses (about 14, born in either Ohio or Iowa). The enumerator only listed initials of the residents' names but all of the initials match with this family's known children. But, there is a conflict with the children's ages as given by Garner. Also, Samuel's birthplace looks like it might be given as New York and not Virginia as expected.13 His occupation was given as a farmer. His real estate was worth $1000 and his personal property was worth $210.13 Follow the link to see the census image. S.           Samuel, age 60, and Hannah, age 44, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census for the Eldora Post Office in Clay Township, Hardin County, Iowa. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Rachel (age 15), Catharine (age 10), Martha (age 7), Carrie (age 3), William (age 1). Samuel's farm is valued at $2640 and his personal property was worth $200.14 Follow the link to see the census image.
