Elias Milslagle was born circa 1827 in Virginia.2 He was the son of Jacob Milslagel.2 He may have been enumerated on the 1830 census for Hampshire County, Virginia in the household of his father as a male aged newborn to five.3 Follow the link to see the census image. 1830 U.S. Census, Hampshire County, Virginia, page 38 Elias served in the military during the Mexican War enrolling on 4 July 1846. He served in 4th Regiment, Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Company K as a private. In 1847 he was left at the Hospital at Jalapa, Mexico. I suspect this was due to injuries. Others in his unit were in this hospital in April of 1847. The company was discharged 26 May 1847 at New Orleans.2,4 On 30 July 1847, Elias applied for bounty lands. On 24 Dec 1847, he was issued Warrant Number 6392.2
Elias married Parthena Martin on 26 June 1850 in Fulton County, Illinois. He was about 23 and she was about 22.2,1 Elias and Parthena lived in Macomb, McDonough County, Illinois, with Thompson Chandler and family for "about three years."2 Elias and Parthena had two children but both died in infancy. According to Parthena, they are buried in Bernadotte.2
Elias, age 23, and Parthena, age 22, were enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in Center, Fulton County, Illinois. The census indicates that they were married within the year. Living nearby are Elizabeth Strain (Elias' sister) and Samuel Milslager (his brother).5 Follow the link to see the census image. 1850 U.S. Census, town of Center, Fulton County, Illinois, population schedule, page 311 (621) Elias and Parthena moved to Calhoun County, Illinois circa 1854. Parthena worked for the family of Judge Phillips while Elias "followed boating on the Mississippi River."2 circa 1858 Elias and Parthena moved to Knightstown, Henry County, Indiana. They went to visit Elias' mother who lived there. Parthena says they stayed about a month, until his mother died.2
Elias died in 1860 in Bernadotte, Green County, Illinois. He was "working alone when crushed by the falling tree."2 He was about 33 years old. On 30 December 1888, Parthena A. Millslagle made claim for a pension under the Mexican War Pensions Act. Garner notes "that Parthena Millslagle was enfeebled is proved by the fact that she said on her pension application that she was aged 88 years and born in the year 1800."
