Levi Richard Milslagle was born circa 1857 in Coles County, Illinois.1,2,3,4 He was the son of Jacob Milslagle and Jane Edmiston.5 Levi, age 3, was enumerated in the household of suspected aunt, Cathrine, and uncle, George Willard, on the 1860 Federal Census for the Canton Post Office in Buckheart Township, Fulton County, Illinois. His mother also lives in the household.6 Follow the link to see the census image.           Levi married Lavina Smith on 28 April 1878 in Fulton County, Illinois. He was about 21 and she was about 18. Levi's name is given as MILSLEGEL. The marriage was performed by the Justice of the Peace, William H. Baxter. The witnesses were Robert Billingsley and David Harris.1,8 Her name has been given in documents as Malvina, Lavina, and Synnia. I believe her name was Lavina because it is the most common. To keep data easier to follow, I am using the name Lavina, regardless of her name in the document. Levi and Lavina had 8 children. One of these children died before the 1910 census. These children are Rose, Fanny, Bessie Honare, Curry, Leona, Daniel Harison, Grace Etta and John Jacob.9
Levi, age 22, and Lavina, age 20, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Oakland, Schuyler County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household was their daughter, Rosa, age 1. Levi is not able to read or write and Lavinia is not able to write.10 Levi worked as a farm laborer.10 Follow the link to see the census image.           Levi, age 52, and Lavina, age 49, were enumerated on the 1910 Federal Census at 514 N. Perkins in Kewanee, Henry County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were some of their children: Curry (age 24), Daniel (age 18), and John (age 8). Grace, age 13, appears to be living in the Illinois Girls Home in Geneva Township, Kass County, Illinois.11 Levi worked as a laborer.11 Follow the link to see the census image.
