Samuel Millslagle was born on 27 June 1803 in Timber Ridge, Hampshire County, Virginia.1,2,3 He was the son of Johann Jacob Mühlschlägel and Elizabeth Cooper.4 He may have been enumerated on the 1810 census for Hampshire County, Virginia in the household of his father as a male aged from newborn to ten years old.5 Follow the link to see the census image. 1810 U.S. Census, Hampshire County, Virginia, page #761 He may have been enumerated on the 1820 census for Hampshire Co in the household of his father as a male aged from sixteen to twenty-six years old.6 Follow the link to see the census image.6 Jacob Milslagel, 1820 U.S. Census, Hampshire County, Virginia, page 279, line #1
Samuel married Jane Pennington on 16 May 1825.1 He was 21; her age is not known.1 Samuel and Jane did not have any children.1 Jane died before November 1829, leaving Samuel a widower.1
Samuel married Joanna Glaize, daughter of George Glaize and Catherine Hetzel, on 5 November 1829 in Hampshire Co.1 They were both about 26 years old. It is his second marriage. The ceremony was performed Rev. Lewis Eichelberger, a Lutheran Minister. Samuel and Joanna had at least 5 children. These children are Catherine, Frances Selena, Isaac Newton, Hannah M. Lucinda Ellen and John J. A.. Samuel reportedly served as the Justice of the Peace for many years in Hampshire Co.1
Samuel was enumerated on the 1830 census for Hampshire Co as Samuel Milslagle, male between 20 and 30 years old. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: Joanna, his wife, aged between 20 and 30 years old.7 Follow the link to see the census image. 1830 U.S. Census, Hampshire County, Virginia, page 41 Samuel purchased land from James Pennington and Mrs. Hannah (Millslagle) Pennington circa 1839 in Concord, Hampshire County, Virginia; James and Hannah sold their land circa 1839 to Samuel Millslagle. They sold two tracts of land totaling 282 acres ". . .with the exception of one acre, being the same on which the Concord Meeting House stands. . ."4
Samuel was enumerated on the 1840 census for Hampshire Co as Samuel Milslagle, male aged between 30 and 40 years. Based on ages, it is possible that the following were also living in the household: Joanna, his wife, aged between 30 and 40; Isaac, aged newborn to five years old; Catherine and Frances, aged five to ten years old. I have not been able to identify these people that were also enumerated with him: one male aged between 30 and 40.8 Follow the link to see the census image.           Samuel, age 47, and Joanna, age 47, were enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in District #24, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Elizabeth (age 20), Francis (age 17), Isaac N. (age 15), Hannah M.L.E. (age 9), and John J.A. (age 5). Also enumerated in this household was William Frank, age 24, who may have been the son of a neighbor, John Frank.9 Samuel worked as a farmer. His real estate is worth $2000.9 Follow the link to see the census image.           Samuel, age 57, and Joanna, age 57, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Yellow Springs, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in this household were two of their children: Hannah (age 18) and John (age 16). Also living with them was Elizabeth McKevin. I do not know Elizabeth's relationship to the rest of this family. She may be a married sister of Joanna.10 Samuel worked as a farmer. His real estate was valued at $2300 and his personal property was valued at $625.10 Follow the link to see the census image.           Samuel was described as "an able, energetic, thrifty and well respected man" by Gardner. She continues, "he served well his community, his church, his family, and his state. Neither he, no his forbearers, ever owned a slave, no did they in any way approve servitude. The never the less deeply felt slavery was a matter subject to remedy by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Samuel . . and Joann. . .were fiercely loyal to the Confederate cause. Their only son that was alive during the war which followed, Isaac, was living in Illinois and was a soldier in the Union Army, as were the sons of Samuel's older brother Andrew of Sangamon County, Illinois. Joseph Alexander Kelso, their son-in-law (my maternal grandfather) and two of the Glaize brothers of Joanna Millslagle were Confederate soldiers and their daughter Ellen Millslagle was to go to Illinois after the was ended and marry a Union Soldier."1
Samuel died on 30 August 1868 in Timber Ridge, Hampshire County, Virginia.1 He was 65 years old. He and Joanna were buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Concord, Hampshire County, Virginia. Joanna's burial place is not known because there is not a cemetery marker for her in this cemetery. [NOTE: Did she remarry?] However, in 1903, a letter written by one of her son hints that she was buried with Samuel.1 He is the grandson of Johann Andreas Mühlschlägel, original immigrant.
