Last Edited=29 Feb 2004

Joanna Glaize was born circa 1803 in Virginia.1,2 She was the daughter of George Glaize and Catherine Hetzel.3 Joanna married Samuel Millslagle, son of Johann Jacob Mühlschlägel and Elizabeth Cooper, on 5 November 1829 in Hampshire County, Virginia.3 They were both about 26 years old. It is his second marriage. The ceremony was performed Rev. Lewis Eichelberger, a Lutheran Minister. Joanna and Samuel had at least 5 children. These children are Catherine, Frances Selena, Isaac Newton, Hannah M. Lucinda Ellen and John J. A..
Samuel was enumerated on the 1830 census for Hampshire Co as Samuel Milslagle, male between 20 and 30 years old. Based on ages, it is possible that Joanna was also living in the household aged between 20 and 30 years old.4 Follow the link to see the census image. 1830 U.S. Census, Hampshire County, Virginia, page 41

Samuel, age 47, and Joanna, age 47, were enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in District #24, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Elizabeth (age 20), Francis (age 17), Isaac N. (age 15), Hannah M.L.E. (age 9), and John J.A. (age 5). Also enumerated in this household was William Frank, age 24, who may have been the son of a neighbor, John Frank.6 Follow the link to see the census image.           Samuel, age 57, and Joanna, age 57, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Yellow Springs, Hampshire County, Virginia. Also enumerated in this household were two of their children: Hannah (age 18) and John (age 16). Also living with them was Elizabeth McKevin. I do not know Elizabeth's relationship to the rest of this family. She may be a married sister of Joanna.8 Follow the link to see the census image.           Samuel died on 30 August 1868, leaving Joanna a widow.3 Joanna died after 1870.9 She and Samuel were buried in Shiloh Cemetery in Concord, Hampshire County, Virginia. Joanna's burial place is not known because there is not a cemetery marker for her in this cemetery. [NOTE: Did she remarry?] However, in 1903, a letter written by one of her son hints that she was buried with Samuel.3
