Connecticut was founded by Puritans from Massachusetts colony in 1633. They brought with them their strict Puritan beliefs which included believing that humans "were inherently evil and could be saved from sin only through lifelong devotion to God." The community they established was governed by the church. In 1639, the Fundamental Orders were written to govern the colony. These orders are considered the first constitution written in the New World. This is how Connecticut got its nickname - The Constitution State. In 1662, Connecticut became an independent colony; separate from Massachusetts.
