Serena A. Stout was born circa 1847 in Indiana.^1,2 She was the daughter of Franklin B. Stout and Julia Ann Ewin.^3,4 Serena, age 23, was enumerated in the household of her parents on the 1870 Federal Census in Eldora Township, Hardin County, Iowa. Her occupation was given as "helper.⁴' Follow the link to see the census image.
Serena married Thomas Millslagle, son of Samuel Milslagel and Julia Ackley, in 1878. He was about 36 and she was about 31.³ Serena and Thomas may have had numerous children but I only know the name of one child, Maude. Thomas died before 1880, leaving Serena a widow.⁵ Serena, age 30, was enumerated in the household of her father on the 1880 Federal Census in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Serena's age is 3 years younger than I would expect. Her daughter, Maude (one year old) also lives here.⁶ Follow the link to see the census image.
