Eli Bennet Bartle was born on 15 January 1868 in Clearspring, Washington County, Maryland.^1,2 Eli married Stella Nichols, daughter of Henry Harrison Nichols and Louisa Delong, on 27 December 1898.¹ Eli and Stella may have had numerous children but I only know the name of one child, Virginia.
Eli, age 49, and Stella, age 45, were enumerated on the 1920 Federal Census in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household was their daughter, Virginia (age 15). They rent their dwelling.³ Eli worked as a (house) carpenter that works for his "own account."³ Follow the link to see the census image. Eli died before 1930. He has also been reported as dying on 28 September 1941 in Chicago. I believe this is in error. The 1930 census show his wife as a widow. Also the Illinois statewide death index published by the State of Illinois lists the person who died on this date as Elizabeth A. Bartle.⁴
