Engeltje De Jong1 (F)
(circa 1841 - 1925)
Relationship=Daughter of Hendrick De Jongh (III).
Last Edited=18 May 2005

Engeltje De Jong was born circa 1841.1 She was the daughter of Hendrick De Jongh (III) and Geertje De Vries. She came to the U.S. sometime before the 1860 census. Engeltje also went by the name of Engel.
Engeltje married Goris VanderSyde, son of Leendert Van Der Zijde and Lintje Van Steenberg, in 1857.2 Engeltje and Goris had at least 8 children. These children are Geortje, Lyntje, Maria, Leendert, Nelly, Airai, H. and Goris. At least one child listed with them on the 1860 census was born before this date. I do not know if this is Goris' second marriage or if the wedding date is inaccurate. I doubt the child was born out of wedlock. Some other marriages were "official" a couple of years later because they needed one of the traveling ministers to come to town. I do not know when their church had a permanent minister.3
Goris, age 31, and Engel, age 21, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census for the Blue Island Post Office in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were four children: Geortje (age 4), Lyntje (age 3), Maria (age 2) and Lundert (age 1/2). They also have two laborers living with them, [RWitness] and John Koomana.4
Goris, age 40, and Engel, age 31, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census in Calumet, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were four of their children: Maria (age 10), Leendert (age 9), Nelly (age 4), and Airai (age 2). Their two oldest children are not listed: Geortje (died 31 Dec 1869) and Lyntje (died 14 Dec 1869). There is a farm hand living in the house but his name is not legible.5 Follow the link to see the census image.
Goris, age 51, and Engeltje, age 42, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Calumet. Also enumerated in this household were 6 children: L[undert] (age 21), M[aria] (age 19) N[elly] (age 14), A[airai] (age 11), H (age 7), and G[oris] Jr. (age 4).6 Follow the link to see the census image. Engeltje died in 1925.1 She was about 84 old.
