Pieter De Jong (M)

     Pieter De Jong was born on 7 August 1811 in Netherlands.¹ Pieter worked as a school teacher in Warmenhuizen, Noord Holland, Netherlands.¹ Pieter married Trijnte Dalenberg, daughter of Cornelis Pieterz Dalenberg and Trijnte Klaasdr Akkerman.¹ Pieter and Trijnte had at least ten children. These children are Jan, Cornelius, Jantje, Dirk, Klaas, Maartje, Trijntje, Antje, Jakob and Pieter.¹
          Pieter and Trijnte probably immigrated between 1844 and 1849 on board the ship Massachusetts with their children. Moody writes, "Pieter de Jong was a powerful influence in early Roseland culture. He was deeply involved in the church and school activities. One of the nine founding fathers of Roseland, Pieter was known as 'de Meester.' He was the first school teacher in de Hooge Prairie and an Elder in the First Reformed Church of Roseland."¹ After coming to the U.S., Pieter De Jong was also known as Peter De Young.
          Pieter, age 39, and Trijnte, age 36, were enumerated on the 1850 Federal Census in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their children: John (age 13), Cornelius (age 12), Jantje (age 11), Dirk (age 10), Klaas (enumerated as a female, age 7), Margarett (age 6), and Catherin (age 1). Mrs. Nancy Johanaca (age 50, widow) and Nella (perhaps her daughter, age 20) also live with this family. The relationship between these families is not known.² Pieter worked as a farmer.           Pieter, age 49, and Catherine, age 45, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census for the Blue Island Post Office in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their five youngest children: Klaas (age 17, farmer), Maartje (age 15), Catharine (age 9), Antje (age 8), and Jakob (age 5). Their oldest children, Cornelius, John, Jane (now Mrs. Madroom) and Dirk are enumerated on the same census page as their parents which indicate that they were neighbors.           Peter, age 59, and Catherine, age 55, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census for the Calumet Post Office in Hyde Park, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Catharina (age 19), Anna (age 18), and Jacob (age 15). It appears that all of their other children are out in their own households.⁴ Pieter worked as a farmer. His real estate was valued at $3,000 and his personal estate was worth $500.⁴ Follow the link to see the census image.
          Catherine died on 5 December 1883, leaving Pieter a widower.¹ Pieter died on 15 June 1893 in Roseland, Cook County, Illinois.¹
