Jan De Jong (M) (28 December 1836 - 18 May 1909) Relationship=Great-grandson of Pieter Cornelisz Dalenberg. Last Edited=18 May 2005 Jan De Jong was born on 28 December 1836 in Warmenhuizen, Noord Holland, Netherlands.1 He was the son of Pieter De Jong and Trijnte Dalenberg.1 Jan De Jong is believed to have immigrated with his parents sometime between 1844 and 1849. After coming to the U.S., he was also known as Jon and John De Young. John, age 13, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1850 Federal Census in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois.2 Follow the link to see the census image.
Jon married Neeltje Mastenbroek on 27 March 1859.1 John and Neeltje had at least 9 children. These children are Trijintje, James, Clara, Jantje, Adriaanus, Jennie, Pieter, Minnie and Mary.1 John, age 23, and Neltje, age 21, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census for the Blue Island Post Office in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household was their daughter, Trijintje who is listed as Catharine and is half a year old.3 Jan worked as a farmer.3 Follow the link to see the census image. Neltje died on 2 March 1903, leaving John a widower.1 John died on 18 May 1909.1
