Klaas Dalenberg (M)

     Klaas Dalenberg was born on 25 February 1817 in Hargen, Schoorl, Noord Holland, Netherlands.¹ He was the son of Cornelis Pieterz Dalenberg and Trijnte Klaasdr Akkerman.¹ Klaas worked as a farmer.¹ Klaas married Cornelia Hoogendonk, daughter of Cornelis Hoogendonk and Dieuwertje Volkers, on 29 December 1844 in Schoorl, Noord Holland, Netherlands. He was 27 and she was 36.¹ Klaas and Cornelia had 3 children. These children are Trijntje, Dieuwertje and Maartje.¹
          Klaas and Cornelia with their children, Trijntje, Dieuwertje and Maartje, left their hometown to begin their journey to the U.S. They were one of 10 families that immigrated together. Both Klaas' and Cornelias' fathers also went with them.¹ On the 28th of April, 1849, Klaas and his family boarded the ship, Massachusetts of Boston, in Le Havre, France. His wife and two daughters died while at sea. The ship landed in New York on 8 June 1849. For an account of their voyage visit this web page.¹ After arriving in Illinois, Klaas Dalenberg purchased land between 108th and 109th Streets, west of on Michigan Avenue Roseland, Cook County, Illinois.¹
          Klaas married Keetje Gouwens, daughter of Willem Gouwens and Pietertje Plak, on 12 May 1850 in Roseland. It was Klaas' second marriage.¹ He was 33 years old; she was 29 years old. Klaas and Keetje had at least 8 children. These children are Cornelius, Willem, Pietertje, Pietertje, Antje, Arie, Peter and May Ella.¹ Klaas Dalenberg was a member of the 1st Reformed Church South Holland, Cook County, Illinois.¹
          Klaas, age 43, and Keetje, age 39, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Thornton, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Catherine (age 14), Cornelius (age 9), William (age 7), Pietertje (age 5), Antje (age 2), Arie (age 6 months). Klaas' real estate was valued at $6000 and his personal estate was worth $1200. Klaas' name was given as Nicl's on the census and Keetje's name was listed as Cornelia.² Klaas worked as a farmer.² Follow the link to see the census image.
          Klaas, age 52, and Keetje, age 48, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census in Thornton. Also enumerated in this household were several children: Catherine (age 25), Cornelius (age 18), William (age 17), Pietertje (age 16), Annie (age 12), Arie (age 10), Peter (age 8), and Jennie (age 5). Klass' name is given as Nicholas and his wife's name was given as Cornelia. His real estate was valued at $12,500 and his personal estate was valued at $18,000.³ Klaas worked as a farmer.³ Follow the link to see the census image.
          Klaas, age 63, and Keetje, age 58, were enumerated on the 1880 Federal Census in Thornton. Also enumerated in this household were his children and I believe her stepchildren: Catherine (age 32), Cornelius (age 28), and Willem (age 27). I believe that Annie (age 22), Oren (age 20), Peter (age 17) and Jennie (age 15) are children they had together.⁴ Klaas worked as a farmer.⁴ Follow the link to see the census image.
