Dirk De Jong (M) (15 June 1840 - 3 January 1914) Relationship=Great-grandson of Pieter Cornelisz Dalenberg. Last Edited=18 May 2005 Dirk De Jong was born on 15 June 1840 in Warmenhuizen, Noord Holland, Netherlands.1 He was the son of Pieter De Jong and Trijnte Dalenberg.1 Dirk De Jong is believed to have immigrated between 1844 and 1849 with his parents on board the ship Massachusetts. After coming to the U.S., Dirk De Jong was also known as Derick De Young.2 Dirk, age 10, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1850 Federal Census in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois.2 Follow the link to see the census image.
Dirk married Lijntje Maat, daughter of Teunis Maat and Aartje (?), in 1858 in Roseland, Cook County, Illinois.1 Dirk and Lijntje had at least 6 children. These children are Arthur, Peter, Ella, Catharine, Tunis and Jacob.1 Dirk, age 20, and Lijntje, age 22, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census for the Blue Island Post Office in Worth Township, Cook County, Illinois. Their farm is valued at $500 and his personal property was worth $200.3 Dirk worked as a farmer. Follow the link to see the census image. Derick, age 30, and Lijntje, age 31, were enumerated on the 1870 Federal Census for the Calumet Post Office in Hyde Park, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their children: Peter (age 9), Ella (age 8), Catharine (age 7), Tunis (age 5), and Jacob (age 2).4 Dirk worked as a farmer. His real estate was worth $2000 and his personal estate is valued at $400.4 Follow the link to see the census image. He married a total of 4 times. I do not know the order of his other wives but their names were Cornelia Jabaay, Mary Borgman and Dina Nijkerk.1 Lijntje died on 14 January 1884, leaving Dirk a widower.1 Dirk died on 3 January 1914.1 He was 73 old.
