     Jan Dalenberg was born on 13 April 1897 in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois.1 He was the son of Willem Dalenberg and Rikje Van Oostenbrugge. Jan was also known as John. Jan, age 4, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1900 Federal Census in South Holland Village, Cook County, Illinois.2 Follow the link to see the census image.           As World War I continued to escalate, the United States instituted a second draft registration. The second registration was for men who had turned 21 since June 5, 1917, so it added men born between June 5, 1896 and June 5, 1897. John filled out a draft card on 5 June 1918 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was 21 years old and described as having medium height, slender build, blue eyes, and light colored hair. His nearest relative was his father, William Dalenberg. Jan gave his name as Jan John Dalenberg. He is an employee of Peter Dalenberg; occupation was not given.1 John was living at 15639 Chicago Street in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois.1
          John, age 22, was enumerated in the household of his parents on the 1920 Federal Census in South Holland Village.4 Jan worked as a carpenter's helper in a shop.4 Follow the link to see the census image. John married Grace Gouwens on 9 June 1921. He was 24 and she was 23. John and Grace had at least 3 children. These children are LaVerne, John W. and Willard. John worked as a grocery store owner.5
          John, age 32, and Grace, age 32, were enumerated on the 1930 Federal Census at 15725 State Street in South Holland, Cook County, Illinois. Also enumerated in this household were their children: LaVerne (age 6), John (age 3 and 10 months), and Willard (age 3 months). They own their house which was valued at $8000 and they have a radio.
