John Rafferty, about 36 years old
John Rafferty was born circa 1826 in Ireland.1 He was the son of (?) Rafferty.2 John married Ann Ross, daughter of (?) Ross.1 John and Ann had at least eight children. These children are Thomas, Edward, John, Ann, James, Mary, Ellen and Elizabeth.1 John and Ann immigrated before 1847 to the United States of America, because their first son was born in Connecticut. I do not know if they immigrated together or if they came separately.1
John, Ann and their children moved to Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio sometime after their son, James, was born in April of 1853.1 John Rafferty became a naturalized citizen on 25 September 1856 in Lawrence County, Ohio.3
John, age 34, and Ann, age 32, were enumerated on the 1860 Federal Census in Ironton. Also enumerated in this household were their children: John (age 13), Thomas (age 11), Ann (age 10), James (age 8), Edward (age 7), Mary (age 3), and Ellen (age 1). His real estate was valued at $150 and his personal estate was valued at $30.1 John worked as a day laborer.1 Follow the link to see the census image. John served in the military during the Civil War. One of his descendants has a picture of him in his uniform. John died circa 26 May 1864.3
