Detailed Lineage of Project Other Group Members 

  Group 6: Descendants of Old Georgia Stark/Starks/Starke Families
Genetic results for participants who report lineage from Georgia ancestors, will be placed in Group 6; unless their genetic results clearly compare favorably with other Groups in the Project. Groups 6a and 6b have member results for two families in Georgia who clearly are not related within Genealogical Time. [Defined as the time period after 1400 to the present.] When #74591 and #232326 are compared over 25 markers, there is a Genetic Distance of 11 and a 1.96% probability they share a common ancestor within 24 generations; clearly indicating these families are not related within genealogical time to members in other Groups in the project. With only three participants tested at this time, it is clear the Stark families of Georgia have more complicated ancestry than previously thought. More participants from men with the surname Stark who descend from Georgia Stark families will need to be tested to have a clear understanding of their ancestry. Group 6c has been temporarily created based on the genealogy of #241988. Group assignment could change depending on his genetic results.

#74591 and #89996  are first cousins; sharing their grandfather Stark as common ancestor. As expected, they were a perfect match over the H12 haplotype. They are descendants of Thomas Starke [1724-1794] whose place of birth in Virginia is not known with certainty. His entire family moved to Wilkes County, Georgia from Charlotte County, Virginia in about 1780; where most of his children were born. Before these results were available and members of Group 4 were tested, it was believed Members of Group 4 and Group 6a would have a common ancestor who lived within genealogical time. [Defined as the time period after 1400 to the present.] However, the genetic results revealed they did not belong to the same Haplogroup. Members of Subgroup 6a are in Haplogroup R-M269. Members of Group 4 are in Haplogroup G. As expected, there was a zero percent probability members of Group 4 and Subgroup 6a could have shared a common ancestor within genealogical time. Because Members of Group 4 are in Haplogroup G and Members of Group 6a are in Haplogroup R, their first common ancestor would have been the progenitor of Haplogroup F — who lived about 45,000 years earlier.

 #232326 genetically representative a previously unknown American Stark Family believed to be descendants of one Benjamin Stark/Starks born in Greenville, Augusta County, Virginia in the year 1774. #232326 is clearly not a descendant of James Stark of Stafford County, VA, nor of Dr. Richard Starke of York County, VA, nor any other Stark/Starks families originating in Virginia. Benjamin's son, Benton Stark/Starks was most likely born in about 1797 in either Wake County or Orange County, North Carolina. After his marriage to Nancy Goodson in 1825, he moved to Clarke County, Georgia and later to nearby Jackson County, Georgia.

Over 37 markers, #232326 has a genetic distance of 13 or greater when compared to other members of the project. When compared to #82072, a descendant of Zerubabel Starks (Group 3), the genetic distance is 13 and there is a 10.26% probability they share a common ancestor within 20 generations. Therefore, they could not have shared a common ancestor within genealogical time (defined as after surnames were established in the 13th & 14th centuries in Western Europe), nor within thousands of years. Could the Georgia Stark/Starks/Starke families be descendants of one common ancestor? More participants from men with the surname Stark who descend from Georgia Stark families will need to be tested to answer this question and others.

#149294 belongs to Haplogroup F. This ancient Haplogroup may have first appeared in North Africa, the Levant, or the Arabian Peninsula as much as 50,000 years ago. It is sometimes believed to represent a "second-wave" of expansion out of Africa. When compared to other members of the project over the H37 haplotype, #149294 has a genetic distance of 34 or greater. The odds greatly favor #149294 could not have shared a common male ancestor with any other member of the project within the last 45,000 years.

#173510 reports European origin of earliest known ancestor, Ferdinand Stark, was Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany. Results are available for Markers 1 through 37. When H 37 Haplotype of #173510 is compared to the Stark Project members, his smallest genetic distance is 23. Therefore, #173510 and members of the Project shared a common ancestor who lived thousands of years earlier; a period before the present considerably earlier than when surnames were established in Europe.

#202943 is not a match to anyone in the Project over these markers. FTDNA predicts he belongs to Haplogroup I2b1 (Shorthand notation I-M223). His earliest known ancestor was Charles "Charley" J. Starks, born in Ohio September 7, 1856. He died in 1929 in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois, burial in the Riverside Cemetery located in Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois. Further research by the member suggests Thomas H. Starks could have been the father of Charles. Genealogical research continues. #202943 has been confirmed to belong to Haplogroup I2b1.

When #153149 was compared to Members in Group 1a who descend from three possible father candidates of Nathan Stark who married Jemima Farnsworth; it would be impossible for any to have been his father. The H37 haplotype of #153149 places him in Haplogroup I1. All of those in Group 1A are members of Haplogroup R1b1b2. For this reason alone, #153149 could not have shared a common ancestor with any member of Group 1a within many thousands of years. This suggests Benjamin Stark who married Minerva White may have been a member of an unrelated Stark family living in Granville, Washington County, New York, rather than a son of any of the possible father candidates; or there was a non-paternal event in the generation of Benjamin or one of the generations that follows to #153149.

Nathan Stark Genealogical Research

A review of the genealogical research indicates there are three different theories suggesting the identity of the father of Nathan. All three suggest Fathers who were descendants of Aaron Stark [1608-1685]. The candidates are: 1) Christopher Stark (Junior), son of Christopher Stark (Senior); 2) Aaron Stark, son of Christopher Stark (Senior); and 3) Nathan Stark, son of Daniel Stark. Candidate 3 married Olive Morgan. The genealogy presented for #153149 is the result of the genealogical research of this member.

Comments: When compared to Members in Subgroup 1A who descend from one of the above possible father candidates of Nathan; it would be impossible for any to have been his father. The H37 haplotype of #153149 places him in Haplogroup I1. All of those in Subgroup 1A are members of Haplogroup R1b1b2.

In human genetics, Haplogroup I1 occurs at the greatest frequency in Scandinavia. The most recent common ancestor of all of those having the I1 haplogroup lived from 4,000 to 6,000 years ago, somewhere in the far northern part of Europe. For this reason alone, #153149 could not have shared a common ancestor with any member of Subgroup 1A within the last 20 generations (after the calendar year 1500). Therefore, #153149 cannot be a descendant of any of the three genealogical candidates suggested to be the father of Nathan Stark who married Jemima Farnsworth.

The H37 Haplotype of #153149 was compared to that of #N17289, a descendant of Abijah Stark, a son of Nathan Stark & Olive Morgan. As expected, there was a zero percent probability they could have shared a common ancestor within the last 20 generations.

This suggests Benjamin Stark or Starks who married Nancy Minerva White may have been a member of an unrelated Stark family living in Granville, Washington County, New York, rather than a son of any of the possible father candidates; or there was a non-paternal event in the generation of Benjamin Starks [1808-1880+] or one of the generations that follows. Genetic results from a second descendant of Benjamin Starks [1808-1880+] could resolve this issue in the future. The lineage presented from #153149 to Benjamin and Minerva (White) Starks is well documented from the New York death certificates for Roscoe E. When #501786 is genetically compared to #671611 over 37 DYS markers, they mismatch at the DYS449 Marker. #501786 has the value 31 at this marker and #671611 has the value 33. They match at all of the other DYS Markers over 37 markers.

The FTDNA Tip calculations to determine the time to the most recent common ancestor of these Members reports an 83.3% probability they share a first common ancestor within the past 7 generations; 91.54% probability they share a common ancestor within the past 9 generations; and 99.05% probability they share a common ancestor within the past 15 generations. More genealogical research is needed to determine the identity of the common ancestor of #501786 and #671611.

#140291 is a descendant of a German immigrant from the region once known as Swabia, now Baden-Wüerttemberg. The origin of Haplogroup R1a remains disputed. It presumably originated somewhere in the Eurasian landmass, where it is most commonly found today. There are two focuses of high frequency of R1a, one in South Asia, near North India, and the other in Eastern Europe, in the area of Ukraine. When compared to other members of the project over the H37 haplotype, #140291 has a genetic distance of 24 or greater. The odds greatly favor #140291 could not have shared a common male ancestor with any other member of the project within thousands of years.

#228697 has been predicted to have the SNP mutation placing him in the R1a1 Haplogroup. His genealogy reports his earliest known ancestor was born in 1823 in West Prussia. This ancestor arrived in the US sometime after 1850. He has a genetic distance of 17 from #140291, a predicted member of the same Haplogroup.

Conflicts with Charles R. Stark Publication

David Starks was the son of Zephaniah who was born in England, came to America when a young man, married Martha Edgerton of Conn., and located in that state. They had two children, David and Eunice, born in Connecticut. The father died on the voyage to Nova Scotia; the mother died in Nova Scotia. David, born in 1765, bought one hundred and ten acres of land in Pittsford in 1783, which land included the farm now owned by Hawkins Hart. He made a clearing, built a house, and married Jennie*, daughter of Stephen Mead of Pittsford, in 1785. Mr. Starks died in this town in 1805; Mrs. Starks died in Buffalo, N. Y., in 1834." *footnote: Jennie Mead was the first female child born in Manchester (1767).

DAVID STARK appears to have been a brother of Jonathan Stark, and was a minister in the same church, in Oldham county, as early as 1812, and perhaps several years earlier. Floyd's Fork church was made up largely of the Stark family. These moving away from year to year, gradually reduced the church, till it numbered, in 1815, only 13 members. David Stark continued to minister to it, doubtless with the hope of building it up again, till the above named period, when he followed his kindred to Indiana, and the forsaken little church dissolved.

Comments: The genealogical research of # 84645 Stark reveals with reasonable accuracy he is a descendant of David Stark of Scott County; reported by the genealogy to be a son of Daniel Stark [1746-1810]. Daniel Stark had a son named Jonathan D. Stark. The genealogy suggests #84645 shares Aaron Stark [1608-1685] as a common ancestor. The H25 haplotype of # 84645 was genetically compared to that of #16335 (Subgroup1a), a known descendant of Jonathan D. Stark [1768-1828]. Their genetic distance was 6. There is a 12.98% probability they share a common ancestor who lived within the last 20 generations. The odds greatly favor they have not shared a common male ancestor in excess of 5,000 years.  This suggests David Stark may have been a member of a unrelated Stark family living in Kentucky, rather than a son of Daniel Stark; or there was a non-paternal event in the generation of Daniel [1746-1810] or one of the generations that follows. Genetic results from a second descendant of David could resolve this issue in the future.

When the results of #547385 were compared to those of the Other Members of the Stark Family Y-DNA Project, there were no close matches. This suggests it is unlikely he could share a common ancestor with any Member of the Stark Project within the last 20 generations or even more generations. This would likely be many years before surname usage became common in about the years 1300 to 1400.  Compared the 37 marker DYS results of #547385 to the entire FTDNA database and found no matches to anyone (limited to matches with a genetic distance of 4 or less). Genetic Distances of 4 or less would be within the time range of common surname usage to the present. #547385 was compared to the FTDNA database over 25 markers. Results of this search limit matches to Genetic Distances of 2 or less due to the reduced number of DYS Markers compared.  There were three matches reported, all three having different surnames, none being the surname Stark. Results over these markers go back from the present to the period when surname usage was in transition. The surnames were the following: 1) Dunford (GD=1); 2) Druitt (GD=2); and 3) Marshall (GD=2). There were only two matches over 12 markers returned. Results over these markers mostly suggest common ancestors at about the time surname usage became common and before usage became common. Surnames were Whetton and Rudd with both having a GD=0.

#334877 has Markers 1 through 37 available for analysis and FTDNA predicts his Haplogroup will be R1b1b2. When the H37 haplotype of #334877 is compared to #76667 in Subgroup 1d, there is a genetic distance of 13. The genetic distance of #334877 is greater than 14 when compared to all other members of the project. This suggests #334877 does not share a common male ancestor with any member of the project that lived within the previous 20 generations and his eventual common male ancestor with #76667 most likely lived several thousand years before the present.

The odds greatly favor #76345 could not have shared a common male ancestor with any other member of the project within 5,000 years. The predicted Haplogroup R-M269 is a shorthand presentation of the Haplogroup R1b1b. When the H25 haplotype of #76345 is compared to the H25 haplotype of other Members with a genetic distance of 7, there is a 21.03% probability they share a common ancestor who lived within the last 20 generations; and a 33.83% probability within the last 24 generations.

#N91230 has 12 marker Haplotype. When compared to #163272 in Group 2f, there is a genetic distance of 6. Excluding #171830 and #172378, the genetic distance of #N91230 is greater than 6 relative to all other members of the project. In comparing 12 markers, the probability that #N91230  and #163272 shared a common ancestor within the last 20 generations is 2.09%. This suggests #N91230 does not share a common ancestor with any member of the project that lived within the previous 20 generations and his eventual common ancestor with #163272 most likely lived many thousands of years before the present.

As expected, his genetic distance is 11 or greater when compared to other male members of the project.  It is believed his Starks ancestors may have lived in Rappahannock County, Virginia; but this is not known with certainty.

When compared to our Members of the Stark Project, his nearest match was to Member #172378, a descendant of Aaron Stark [1608-1685]. Over 37 markers, #363878 and #172378 have 9 mismatches. The Most recent common Ancestor (TMRCA) report for this comparison was only a 3.15% probability #363878 and #172378 could share a common male Ancestor within 12 generations. It is very unlikely Henry and #172378 could share Aaron Starke within 12 generations and much more likely they shared a common ancestor who lived many generations before Aaron. #363878 mismatches to descendants of Aaron Stark ranged from 9 to 13. His mismatches to Family Group 2, descendants of the Killermont Stark Families of Scotland, ranged from 14 to 17; indicating the TMRCA lived even more generations earlier.
