Comments 12/13/2012

#74402 (C1a) results over 37 Markers resulted in a perfect match to the Group 2 37 marker Modal Haplotype. When #260109 (C1b) was compared to (C1a), there was a 84.47% probability they share a common ancestor within 7 Generations and a 92.33% probability they share a common ancestor within 9 generations; both results being above the probability confidence threshold of 80%.

(C1a) & (C1b), according to the genealogy, share James Stark [1747-1829] as a common ancestor. However, the participant (C1a) is in the same generation as the grandfather of participant (C1b). James Stark [1747-1829] lived six generations earlier than (C1a) and the grandfather of C1b) and the genealogy suggests they share James as a common ancestor within 7 generations. Assuming the Grandfather of (C1b) and the participant (C1b) have the same haplotype, there is a 84.47% probability they share James Stark [1747-1829] as a common ancestor; this being within the 80% confidence threshold.

If  the grandson of (C1a) has the same Haplotype as (C1a), then a genetic comparison of (C1a)'s grandson to (C1b) results in a 92.33% probability they would share James Stark [1747-1829] as a common ancestor.

#424057 (C1c) results over 12 Markers resulted in a perfect match to the 12 Marker Group 2 Modal Haplotype. When (C1c) was compared to #74402 (C1a), having the 12 Marker modal haplotype, there was a 55.88% probability they share a common ancestor within 8 Generations and a 60.17% probability they share a common ancestor within 9 generations; both results below our probability confidence threshold of 80%. There is a 76.11% they share a common ancestor within 14 generations, the approximate generation of John Muirhead (Alias John Stark) considered to have been an ancestor of James Stark of Stafford County, Virginia.

Based on the genealogy submitted by this Member, upgrading this test to 25 or 37 markers will most likely improve the above probability values, as occurs when more markers are tested. [See comments for #260109 (C1b) who was compared to #74402 (C1a).]

Note 12/22/2013: The 1880 census for Roane County reports a R. S. Short, age 6, living in the home of Robert & Elvira (Barnett) Short. They report R. S. Short was adopted and his parents were both born in Virginia. Robert and Elvira both report they were born in Tennessee. I observed Richard S. Short of Monroe County, wife named Sarah F. Short, reported in the 1900 census. He also reported his parents were born in Virginia. #315853 has confirmed this was his Grandfather. We now begin the search for his Stark great-grandparents in Tennessee.

#283515 (C3b) is a perfect match to the 37 maker Modal Haplotype for Group 2. He is a perfect 37 marker genetic match to Group 2 members #74402 (C1a) and #171929 (C2b). (C1a) is a known descendant of James Stark [1695-1754] of Stafford County, Virginia. When compared to (C1a), There is a 98.26% probability they could share James Stark of Stafford Co., VA, as  a first common ancestor within 9 generations.

#115705 (C3a) and (C3b) are descendants of Thomas Stark [1721-1802], a son of James Stark [1695-1754]. (C3a) descends from Jeremiah Stark [1749-1824]; while (C3b) descends from James Stark [1756-1835], both born in Fairfax Co., VA and sons of Thomas Stark [1721-1802]. There is a 31.77% probability they could share Thomas as a first common Ancestor within 8 generations.

While this is a low confidence probability, all of the mismatches are high mutation rate Markers suggesting it's possible this number of mutations could have occurred within that number of generatons. The genealogy of (C3b) and (C3a) appears to be correct; but the perfect genetic match of (C1a) to (C3b) confirms #283515 (C3b) is a descendant of James Stark [1695-1754] through his son Thomas Stark [1721-1802].

#338943 (C4a) is a perfect match to the 67 maker Modal Haplotype for Group 2. He is a perfect 67 marker genetic match to Group 2 members #171929 (C2b) and #315853 (C2e). (C2b) is a known descendant of James Stark of Stafford County, Virginia.

(C4a) is a perfect match #339097 (C4b) over 37 markers. Both are known descendants of two different sons of Thomas M. Stark. The father of (C4a) and Member (C4b) are cousins, three generations removed. Thomas M. Stark, their earliest known male common ancestor, was the gg-grandfather of (C4b) and ggg-grandfather of (C4a).

Recent research in the publication entitled, James Stark of Stafford County, Virginia and his Descendants, has revealed the names of the parents of Thomas M. Starks. [Compiled by Harris and Jorgensen, 1985. Thomas M. Starks Parents presented on Page 751, Volume 2.]

The publication reported a Sister of Thomas M. Starks married Williamson Price. The name of the g-grandfather of (C4b) presented in the 1850 census for Batavia, Clermont Co., OH, was Williamson P. Starks. Therefore, it is likely his g-grandfather's full name was Williamson Price Starks. Likewise, it is also likely the middle name of Thomas M. Starks was Marshall, the maiden name of his Mother.

It is certain, genetically, (C4a) and (C4b) are descendants of James Stark of Stafford Co., VA. The genealogy referenced above, although circumstantial from Thomas M. Starks to James Stark of Stafford Co., VA, is supported genetically. When (C4a) is compared to (C2b) over 67 markers, there is a 98.96% probability that the Father of (C4a) and (C2b) share a common ancestor within 8 generations; or share James Stark of Stafford Co., VA, as a common ancestor in 7 generations — because (C2b) and (C4b)'s Father cannot share a common male ancestor in the last 6 generations.

When (C4a) & (C4b) are genetically compared to each other over 37 markers, there is a 83.49% probability the Father of (C4a) and (C4b) could share a common male ancestor within 4 generations; or share Thomas M. Stark as a common ancestor in Generation 3 — because (C4a)'s Father and (C4b) cannot share a common male ancestor in the last 2 generations. A 83.49% probability is above the Administrators 80% probability confidence threshold.

When (C4a) & (C4b) are genetically compared to each other over 37 markers, there is a 83.49% probability the Father of (C4a) and (C4b) could share a common male ancestor within 4 generations; or share Thomas M. A 83.49% probability is above the Administrators 80% probability confidence threshold.

The probability is high that (C4b) and (C4a) would be a perfect match over 67 markers if (C4b) were to upgrade to the 38 thru 67 markers, for no mutations over these markers has been observed — thus far — for members of Group 2 tested over these additional markers.

Comments 07/28/2012

#241988 (D2a) results over 37 Markers were a perfect match to #245962 (D2b) and there is a 89.48% probability they share Charles Troup Stark as a common ancestor within 5 generations; this being above the probability confidence threshold of 80%. Over 37 Markers, (D2a) is a perfect match to four other members of Group 2 and a perfect match to the 37 Marker Modal haplotype for this group. Other than (D2b), (D2a) is also a perfect match to two members of Group 2c, who are descendants of James Stark [1696-1754] of Stafford County, Virginia. (D2a)'s genetic comparison to these members of Group 2c, statistically, indicate there is a 98.89% probability (D2a) shares a common ancestor within 10 generations, for example, with #74402 (C1a), a genealogically proven 9th generation descendant of James Stark [1696-1754]. Genetically, this suggests (D2a) and (D2b) most likely are descendants of the same James Stark [1696-1754].

Genetically, the Group 2 Analysis entitled, "Report 2: Genetic Genealogy Report; Descendants of Archibald Stark, James Stark, & Dr. Richard Starke," provides a good explanation why (D2a) and (D2b) most likely are not descendants of Archibald Stark of New Hampshire, nor Dr. Richard Starke of York County, Virginia. Their descendants results are reported in Groups 2a & 2b. Click HERE to review the report.

(D2a) genetic comparisons to descendants of Archibald Stark (Group 2b) or Dr. Richard Starke (Group 2a), will, statistically, be identical to (C1a)'s genetic comparisons to these Members. Therefore, the Report 2 analysis also applies to (D2a) and (C2b). What is missing is the genealogical connection of Charles Troup Stark and Abner Stark to James Stark [1696-1754]. Assuming Abner was a grandfather of Charles Troup Stark, it would appear (D2a) and (D2b) are possibly missing two or three generations between Abner Stark and James Stark.

The lineage presented is not known with certainty earlier than Charles Troup Stark. Circumstantial evidence suggests William Stark who married Rachel Jenkins, may have died before or soon after the birth of Charles Troup Stark. Rachel may have married J. McBride before 1860. The Cass County, Texas 1860 census reports Chas Stark, age 6, living in the home of J. McBride. This census reports he and his older brother, 8 year old Jesse Abner Stark, were born in Georgia, as was a 28 year old female, M. McBride, believed to be the mother of the Stark Brothers. The genealogical research for the connection K1 and K2 to James Stark [1696-1754] continues.

#175209 (D3a) has a genetic distance of 2 when compared to the most common H37 Haplotype for Group 2. In compared 37 Markers to #115170 (D1a), #171929 (C2b), and #74402 (C1a), the probability that (D3a) and these members of Group 2 shared a common ancestor within the last 20 generations is 99.43%. The genealogy of (C1a) and (C2b) suggests they are descendants of James Stark [1696-1754] of Stafford County, Virginia. These genetic comparisons suggest #175209 (D3a) most likely also shares James Stark [1696-1754] as a common ancestor.

Note: When a DYS- 389-1 (Marker 10) and DYS-389-2 (Marker 12) comparison yields a difference at both of these markers, they can represent a mutation of 1 rather than 2 if the mutation is plus 1 at both markers or - 1 at both markers. In this case, the mutation is -1 at both Markers relative to the most common allele values for Markers 10 and 12. Therefore, the genetic distance over the H12 Haplotype is 1. Adding the observed mutation at Marker 15 results in a total genetic distance of 2 over the H37 Haplotype when compared to the most common H37 Haplotype in Group 2.

Comment: #N6868 (E1a) has the surname Kelly. Earliest ancestor lived in Ireland. Has a genetic distance of 1 when his H67 haplotype is compared to #171929 (C2b). Possible (E1a) and (C2b) have a common ancestor who lived before surnames were fully established (between the years 1200 and 1500); or there was a surname change from Stark to Kelly after a Stark family moved from Scotland to Ireland (about 1620 to 1720). (E1a)  also has a genetic distance of 1 from the most common H67 modal haplotype in this group. There is a low probability of 94.86% he shares a common ancestor with (C2b) within 8 generations and a high probability of 99.99% he shares a common ancestor with (C2b) within 20 generations. Therefore, if they have an common ancestor, he may have lived between 7 and 19 generations earlier. This comparison  suggest they may share a common ancestor who lived between 7 (94.86% probability) and 19 (99.99% probability) generations earlier. The Genetic comparison of(E1a) to (E2a) (having the same Kelly surname)s results in the same probabilities and conclusions related to a genetic distance of 1 over 67 markers

Comment: #226545 (E1b) has the surname Kelly. Earliest ancestor probably lived in Ireland. He is a perfect match when his H67 haplotype is compared to #171929 (C2b). Possible (E1b) and (C2b) have a common ancestor who lived before surnames were fully established (between the years 1200 and 1500); or there was a surname change from Stark to Kelly after a Stark family moved from Scotland to Ireland (about 1620 to 1720). (E1b) is a perfect match to the H67 Modal haplotype for this group. There is a low probability of 98.96% he shares a common ancestor with (C2b) within 8 generations and a high probability of 100.00% he shares a common ancestor with (C2b) within 20 generations. Therefore, if they have an common ancestor, he may have lived between 7 and 19 generations earlier. His H67 Haplotype comparison to (C2b) suggest they may share a common ancestor who lived between 7 (98.96% probability) and 19 (100.00% probability) generations earlier. The Genetic comparison of (E1a) to (E1b) (having the same Kelly surnames) results in the same probabilities and conclusions related to a genetic distance of 1 over 67 markers..

#385777 - Lineage (Return to Y-DNA Test Results)

Father of Ralph Bogle [1745-1841]: Presuming his surname could have been Stark, Kelly, or Kidd suggests #385777 could not share a common ancestor with descendants of James Stark of Stafford Co., VA, Kelly Members, nor Kidd Members;  in the last 8 generations, or within the last 9 generations. Probability within 9 generations over 111 markers is 70.14% compared to Mr. Kidd (#B6003); over 111 markers, 37.96% when compared to Mr. Kelly (#N6868). When compared to Mr. Stark (#338943) over 67 markers, probability is 76.25% could share a common ancestor within 9 generations. If there was a surname change, it's very unlikely the Father of Ralph Bogle took the surname Kelly. It's borderline likely the Father of Ralph Bogle born in Ireland in 1745 took the surname Kidd or Stark. See comments, right, for a more complete analysis.

Comment: #385777(E3c) has the surname Bogle. When compared to the 37 marker Modal Haplotype of Group 2, he has a genetic distance of 3. When compared to the 67 Marker Modal Haplotype of Group 2, he has a genetic distance of 4. No Members of the Project with the surname Stark have been tested over 111 markers.

When #385777 is compared to the Three Kidd relatives (E2a, E2b, & E2c) over 111 markers, he has a genetic distance of 7. When compared to Mr. Kelly (E1a) over 111 markers, there is a genetic distance of 9.

For the Kelly comparison over 111 markers, the Probability they could share a common ancestor within Genealogical time, or within 18 generations, is  95.50%. Based on the Probability analysis, the most likely generation range in which Mr. Kelly and Mr. Bogle could share a common ancestor would be within 18 generations (95.50%); to within 13 generations (75.57%); to most likely, but not impossible, not less than Generation 12.

For the Kidd comparison over 111 markers, the Probability they could share a common ancestor within Genealogical time, or within 18 generations, is 99.30%. Based on the Probability analysis, the most likely generations in which Mr. Kidd and Mr. Bogle could share a common ancestor would be within 18 generations; to within 10 generations (78.54%); to most likely, but not impossible, not less than Gen 9.

Mr. Stark (#338943) and Mr. Kelly (#226545)(E1b) are a perfect Match over 67 markers to Mr. Kidd (#B6603)(E2a). I believe if both were tested over 111 markers, there genetic distance from Mr. Bogle would be the same, GD = 7. Therefore, it is very likely a comparison of Mr. Bogle to Mr. Stark (#338943) or Mr. Kelly (#226545) over 111 markers would arrive at the same probabilities stated in the Comparison of Daniel Bogle to Mr. Kidd.

While Mr. Bogle has been placed in Project Group 2e, based on the above probability evaluation, I don’t believe an ancestral match to Members of the Stark Project will be easily found, but if found, it’s more likely to be found in Scotland, near Glasgow, than Ireland.

Comments 03/02/2010

When the H37 haplotype of #164272 was compared to #74402 in Subgroup 2C, there was a genetic distance of 16. There is a .05% probability they share a common ancestor who lived within the last 20 generations. The odds greatly favor they have not shared a common male ancestor in excess of 5,000 years. This result over the H 37 haplotype has clearly revealed #164272 was not a descendant of James or any other member of Group 2 above.

The Genealogy suggests #164272 is a descendant of John Stark [1717-1781], son of James Stark of Stafford County, Virginia. Either John Stark [1717-1781] was not a son of James or there was a non-paternal event in the generation of James Stark or one of the generations that follows. Genetic results from a second descendant of John Stark [1717-1781] could resolve this issue in the future. Finally, there could be an error in the genealogy presented.

# 164272 & #171830 were a perfect match over the H12 Haplotype. However, the genetic distance increased to 13 in the H37 comparison. In comparing their H37 Haplotypes, the probability they shared a common ancestor within the last 20 generations is 2.59%. Their common ancestor most likely lived thousands of years earlier.
