Robert and Catherine (Carr) Wigle

Robert and Catherine (Carr) Wigle.
Note her deformed left hand.

Robert Wigle was born 4 November 1797, in (now West) Virginia. His obituary indicates he was born 14 April 1797. He married Catherine Carr on 12 November 1816 [Source: https://sites.rootsweb.com/~wvhardy/harmarw.htm; Catherine was born 20 April 1800 in Hardy Co., VA the daughter of Michael and Hannah Carr].

The 1820 census, page 102, for Hardy Co. Virginia, lists Robert "Waggel" and John "Waggel." In 1822 they moved to Ross County, then to Delaware County, Ohio (source: Robert's obituary). The Delaware County, Ohio census lists Robert Wigle in Scioto township in 1830 [see
Migration Map]. The History of Union County, Ohio, page 676, indicates that Robert Wigle, Archibald Wigle [Robert's oldest son], and John Wigle came to Union Co. in 1839-40. A Jacob Wigle, John's oldest son, came in 1838-39.

In 1840 the Robert Wigle family is found in Leesburg Township census index page 9 with Thomas Wigle [Robert's brother]. In 1850 the family is living in Taylor Township and William P. Irwin, the son-in-law, is living with them. The 1870 census has Thomas Wigle again living with Robert's family. Robert and Catherine lived on their farm in Taylor township for the remainder of their lives. The 1877 Union Co. Atlas shows their farm of 77.5 acres about 4 miles north of Marysville, Ohio. [See the 1895 map of Union Co.]

Land Records from Union Co., OH Deeds (FHL film 572,548) on 26 June 1847, show Margaret S. Duncan of Baltimore Co. MD by attorney in fact James Turner of Marysville, Union Co., OH, selling to Robert Wigle, $310, 77-1/2 acres, part of lot 10 in survey 4264 (Entry #10-634). Mortgage from Harrison Shaw and Robert (X) Wigle to Margaret S. Duncan for the lots, paid 1853 (Entry #10-636) Source: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dobson/md/mdbalti5.htm. The 1870 census indicates that Robert and Catherine could not write, which is why he signed his land records as "X".

Robert died on 4 August 1887 at the age of 90y 8m 20d [Source: Union Co. Genealogical Society Website indicates he was 90y 3m 20d]. Catherine died on 10 December 1888 at the age of 88y 7m 20d [Source: Union Co. Genealogical Society Website]. During the last 8 years of his life he was confined to the house and for 5 years he apparently suffered dementia as he was "destitute of reason" (source: Robert's obituary). They are buried in Old Union Cemetery, Union Christian Church, which is near where they lived, located on the east side of Raymond/Peoria Road north of Marysville.

Robert and Catherine apparently raised Joseph Neer from the age of 8 until he was 27 as he is included with the family in the 1860, 1870, and
1880 census records. Robert and Catherine had the following children:

Archibald WYGLE, born 21 Sep 1819, in Virginia [Note that Archibald changed the spelling of his last name to "Wygle". On his tombstone and in his will his last name is spelled Wygle.]

Elizabeth WIGLE, born 21 May 1820, in Virginia

Corban WYGLE, born 19 October 1825 in Ohio [Note that Corban changed the spelling of his last name to "Wygle". On his tombstone and in his probate records his last name is spelled Wygle.].

Hannah WIGLE GRIFFIN, born 1 Jan 1832 in Ohio.

Emily S. WIGLE, born 10 Sep 1840, died 7 Aug. 1843 at the age 3y 10m 29d, daughter of R. & C. Wigle [
Union Co. Genealogical Society Website indicates that she died 7 Dec. 1843].

[Note that Sarah changed the spelling of her last name to "Wygle". In her obituary her last name is spelled Wygle.].

See Ohio County Maps at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/map1/cntymap.asp. Union County is located from the exact middle, 2 counties to the left. The 1895 Ohio County Map for Union County is located at http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/OH/state.htm. This is a slow-loading map for some.
