LAUNCH OF A YAWL AT ALDEBURGH
A very interesting event, and one which has agreeably disturbed the monotony of the winter season, occurred here on Saturday afternoon, 21st inst., when a fine new beach yawl - or gig - was launched, and presented by the Mayor (Mr. W. H. HALL) to the North Company of the Aldeburgh beachmen. Although the weather was very unpropitious, a large number of townspeople and visitors were present, and evinced the liveliest interest in the proceedings, which were further enhanced by the attendance of the Aldeburgh Town Jubilee brass band, which played a very nice selection of music, under bandmaster CHAPMAN.
The launch took place at Slaughdon, from the boatbuilding yard of Mr. Harry TILBERY, who has decidedly added to his already high reputation by this, his first venture in yawl building. The boat is English oak built, and copper fastened throughout, very strong, and has galvanised iron fittings. It is 37½ feet long, 5 feet 6 inches beam, and 2 feet 6 inches deep; rows eight oars, and sails with one large lug-sail. The origin of this very acceptable present to the beachmen - whose living is at all times a precarious one - had its birth in August last, when Mr. Charles S. BROWN, of London and Edmonton, a frequent visitor to Aldeburgh for many years, who takes a great interest in the beachmen and fishermen, hearing that the old beach yawl, Ranger, was unseaworthy, and that rhgough hard times the men were unable themselves to pay for a new baot, suggested to the then Mayor (Mr. Joseph FLINTHAM) and Mr. W. H. HALL (Deputy-Mayor) that a subscription should be started, he feeling certain that he could collect a large portion of the sum required. ...
The boat was christened by Mr. C. S. BROWN, and named the Dorothy, after his little daughter. Hearty cheers were given as the launch took place, Mr. BROWN and several friends going in the yawl for her trial trip. She acted splendidly both under sail and rowing, and gave great satisfaction both to the beachmen and all concerned. ...
