2. James* TILBURY b. c.1827 Fingest, Buckinghamshire (1851: Farm Laborer) (1880: Brickmaker)
m.(1) Levina* (Louisa) BULLOCK 30 October 1847 Great Marlow [2Q 1848 Wycombe (6/563)],
b. 1828 Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire (1851: Lacemaker)

Francis BULLOCK (father of Levina)
m. Ann TILBY 18 November 1827

From descendant MaryanneC:
"Levina had one brother James b. 1834 and possibly another
(William of Great Marlow m. Elizabeth HARDING 1837?)"

1841: lvg. Lane End, Buckingham
John TILBY age 65 b. in County (Ag. Lab.)

James BULLOCK age 7

The above would appear to confirm another researcher's conclusion that John TILBY b. c.1775 and Ann TILBY (married BULLOCK) were brother and sister (John & wife Ann had three BULLOCK descendants in their household).

3. Levina [Lavinia] Jane TILBURY Chr. 23 September 1855 Lane End, Buckinghamshire

m. 16 May 1880, age 24, High Wycombe (3a/722) (Father: James TILBURY, Brickmaker)
Henry BUNCE, age 23, Labourer

From ages and birthplaces, these MAY have been (Lavinia) Jane & Henry in 1881 (no certainty):

1881: lvg. Cowley Ch. Rd, Hillingdon, Middlesex
Henry BUNCE, Head age 25 b. Denham, Buckingham (Blacksmith)
Jane [?TILBURY?]BUNCE, Wife age 26 b. Lane End, Buckingham
Thomas BUNCE, Father (Widower) age 62 b. Denham, Buckingham (Farm Lab.)

The following births & deaths MAY have been part of Jane & Henry's family (given names):

Thomas Charles BUNCE b. 4Q 1881 (Uxbridge 3a/99)
Thomas Charles BUNCE d. 1Q 1890 age 8 (Uxbridge 3a/29)

James William BUNCE b. 2Q 1883 (Uxbridge 3a/30)
James William BUNCE d. 1Q 1891 age 7 (Uxbridge 3a/20)

Thomas BUNCE d. 1Q 1891 age 68 (Uxbridge 3a/14)

Jane BUNCE d. 2Q 1886 age 32 (Uxbridge 3a/15)

NB: although it appears on several occasions in other lines, that the Church authorities sometimes verified nomenclature (and corrected it), the UK did not correlate births and deaths; therefore Lavina Jane on christening and birth registration COULD have been Jane on death registration.
The Henry BUNCE listed above appears to have remarried before 1901 (no evident PRO reg.):

1901: lvg. Iver, Buckinghamshire
Henry BUNCE age 43 b. Denhamhurst, Buckinghamshire (Engine Driver &[at] Brickfield)
Louisa BUNCE age 39 b. Hillingdon, Middlesex
Henry BUNCE age 12 b. Uxbridge, Middlesex
Beatrice BUNCE age 11 b. Uxbridge, Middlesex
Charles BUNCE age 9 b. Uxbridge, Middlesex
Thomas BUNCE age 7 b. Uxbridge, Middlesex
Sarah BUNCE age 4 b. Iver, Buckinghamshire
Albert BUNCE age 1 b. Iver, Buckinghamshire

3. Louisa TILBURY b. c.1862 Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire

No evident bmd for this Louisa, so far; a Louisa TILLBURY, age 19 b. High Wycombe, was working for THOROGOOD at the "Red Lion", High street, Great Missenden, and it is just possible that this was Louisa b. Great Marlow.

James & Emma(Emily)'s Family

3. William TILBURY b. 30 June 1867 Tylers Green, Wycombe (reg. 3 August 1867)
(Father: James TILBURY, Brickmaker, Mother: Emily [GODDARD])

No confirmed civil registration of marriage between James TILB(UR)Y and Emily(Emma) GODDARD has yet been found; the 1Q 1864 entry (Wycombe 3a/471) may have been theirs. The following census listings may have been those of Emily(Emma) and her GODDARD family.

1841: lvg. Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire (all b. in County)
Ann GODDARD b. c.1775
Robert GODDARD b. c.1781
- Sarah GODDARD b. c.1811
- John GODDARD b. c.1835
- Martha GODDARD b. c.1838
- Emeley GODDARD b. c.1840

Father: James TILBURY b. c.1827 Fingest, Buckinghamshire (Farm Lab.)
Mother: (Emma) b. c.1837 Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire
3. James TILBURY b. c.1864 Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire
3. William TILBURY b. c.1867 Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire

Two James TILBURYs were b. 2Q 1864, apparently both in Great Marlow:
- James Frederick TILBURY (Wycombe 3a/409)
- James Henry TILBURY (Wycombe 3a/401)

Another child was b. 3Q 1865, probably also in Great Marlow:
- John TILBURY (Wycombe 3a/397)

Of these the attribution is:
James Frederick* & John - sons of James b. Richmond & wife Charlotte (see under)
James Henry - son of James & Emma(Emily)

* Known as Frederick James TILBURY: see "James Tilbury of the George & Dragon" below.

James TILBURY b. Richmond Surrey c.1821, had moved into the Great Marlow area with his wife Charlotte; FreeBMD lists this marriage:

James SILBURY
m. Charlotte BALLARD 2Q 1855 (St. Geo. H. Sqr. 1a/269)

For his family see the following pages:

No further trace found of Emma (as at April 2006); possibilities for James TILBURY & son William in 1881:

A James of the right age was in Great Marlow in 1881, but both he and Hannah are listed - continuously - in previous Censuses as S[T]ILBY, and would therefore seem unrelated to this line.

1881: lvg. Ragmans Castle, Great Marlow, Buckingham
James TILBURY, Head age 54 b. High Wycombe, Buckingham (Farm Labourer)
Hannah TILBURY, Wife age 52 b. Hazlemere, Buckingham (Lace Maker)

3. William TILBURY b. c.1867 Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire

1901 gives 2 William TILBURYs age 32; one of them appears in 1881 and is documented elsewhere (1901: Hackney). The second William, a chairmaker born in Buckinghamshire, was in Birmingham; his birthplace was given as High Wycombe - however, to date this William is invisible in 1881, and no trace of his parents have so far been found then in the other High Wycombe Tilbury groups.

A William of this age, father James (deceased pre-January 1891) married Mary Ann MAZEY - who died in 1895 in Darlington; William remarried in Darlington.

Message received 14 June 2005 from William's descendant Colin (& wife Pearl):
"We have obtained the birth certificate of William TILBURY b. 30 June 1867 at Tylers Green, Wycombe, to James TILBURY & Emily formerly GODDARD. James was given as a Brickmaker.
The birth was registered on 3 August (3Q) 1867.
We think this is the William who later married Mary Ann MAZEY."

THE HUSBAND ABSENT

Jane Ann TILBURY, of Bank Top, Shildon, summoned George SANDERSON, a neighbour, before the Auckland magistrates yesterday, for using obscene language. Complainant, who was represented by Mr. T. JENNINGS, stated her husband went to South Africa in May, and she complained that ever since his departure defendant had repeatedly come to her house and used to her threatening and disgusting language. — Defendant was fined 10s., and bound over to keep the peace.

BULLINGDON PETTY SESSIONS

COUNTY HALL, SATURDAY — Before Sir William ANSON, Bart., M.P., Messrs. E. S. HAMERSLEY, P. F. WILLERT, E. NEVELL, and J. WHITE — MAINTENANCE CASES
Mr. T. W. MALLAM made an application on behalf of the County S.P.C.C. for the custody of a child named Laura TILBURY, daughter of George TILBURY, labourer, of Headington, who was recently convicted for cruelty to his children. Mr. MALLAM said Baron PARAVICINI was willing to take the custody of the child, and proposed sending it to Bedford. As a matter of fact, Miss CARTER had already taken the child there. He further asked that the father should be ordered to pay 1s. 6d. a week towards the maintenance of his daughter. He received 12s. 6d. a week and had only two other children to support. — The application and order were granted.

Alfred TILBURY b. 28 February 1875
m. Sarah Jane DAY 19 December 1896 Sunbury Middlesex

The only Alfred I can find of the right age in 1901 is this one, who seems most probably to be George's son:

1901: lvg. Walton-on-Thames, Surrey
Alfred TILBURY age 27 b. Wycomb, Buckinghamshire (Carter On Farm)
Sarah TILBURY age 26 b. Newbury, Hampshire
5. Nellie TILBURY age 2 b. Charlton, Middlesex
5. William TILBURY age 1 b. Hersham, Surrey

Since George's brother Charles was working as a carter in Oxfordshire (below), this could raise the probability of 27-year old Alfred having been George's son.

** From BarbaraH writing in 'The Tilbury Magazine' guestbook:
I was always told that my family background was gypsy. My grandfather (TILBURY) died in 1961 in High Wycombe ... He lived with his second wife (Win) in Wycombe barracks near the hospital. He married a CURTIS (also, I believe, a Wycombe name) but she died at a very young age, about 44. I think CURTIS is the gypsy connection. Granny CURTIS's mother used to own and live in one of the small terraced cottages right next to Wycombe Rye mill, sadly now developed into a ring road ... Hilma used to attend Mill End School, High Wycombe.

It would seem probable that Alfred b. c.1883 was a descendant of Charles & Harriet; according to his age he may have been a son of Charles & Louisa. In 1901 Alfred was the only TILBURY listed for Fingest.

John T. of Lane End

On 8 May 1859 a John TILBREY age 30 b. [c.1829] Lane End, living in Great Marlow, occupation Sawyer, was received into Aylesbury Gaol.
No details of his 'crime' or sentence are given, but two notes were added:
1) mainly worked in London for past 9 years;
2) "I have a very bad opinion of this man"
On 20 January 1872 a John TILBURY, age 44, b. [c.1828] Lane End, living in Marlow, occupation labourer (parents deceased) was imprisoned for:
"Unlawful possession of game - 8 pieces"
He was sentenced to 2 months in Aylesbury Gaol
This MAY have been the John lodging with James & Levina in Fingest in 1851 (see top of page), but the additional baptismal notes (April 2006) leave open the possibility of their having been 2 John TILBURYs of about the same age and in this group of families.
No John TILBURY of this age is evident in 1881, but PRO lists:
John TILBURY d. 3Q 1873 age 46 Wycombe (3a/315)
Buckinghamshire County Council (UK) offers a wide-ranging history & research section on its webpages, including 'Victorian Prisoners in Buckinghamshire, Aylesbury Gaol in the 19th Century' - a searchable database with photos of some prisoners. (The above 2 entries seem to be the only Tilb...s)
