"St. Etheldreda's Chapel, Ely Place, Holborn, is the only part remaining of [Ely House] the palace of the bishops of Ely for some centuries. ... During the time of the parliamentary war the property went to ruin, and streets were built upon the garden. Ely Place was not erected until 1775."

"A little north of St. Andrew's, Holborn, and running parallel to Hatton Garden, stand two rows of houses known as Ely Place."

While there may have been another Thomas TILBURY, lawyer, none has been identified to date; therefore the transaction beneath was probably by Thomas jnr. of Norwich, particularly since it was for a public house.

LANGDALE: the following documents are listed as tending to confirm that the TILBURY who was the partner of Philip LANGDALE was Thomas TILBURY jnr. from Norwich. For anyone using the Roman Catholic element to help trace their ancestors, Philip LANGDALE was of that persuasion, (as were some of the RABNETT family associated with the Pancras brass founding TILBURYs; as well as descendants of the Cowdray (Sussex) TILBURYs).

- Descendants inherited title, estates at Houghton and Holme on Spalding Moor;
- Holme Hall restored by his son in 1718;
- Present Georgian house at Houghton built 1765 for Philip LANGDALE, probably by Thomas ATKINSON of York;
- Family continued recusant; 1 year after Houghton Hall built, mission was set up at the house for a Catholic priest;
- Result: at least one third of parish was Catholic; by early 19thC local parish church was in disrepair, vicar in anguish;
- Marmaduke, 5th Lord LANGDALE, d. 1778, title became extinct (2 daughters);
- Houghton Hall descended to senior male of LANGDALE family, Philip LANGDALE (m. Elizabeth ACTON 1775 - no children);
- Estates returned to descendants of 5th Lord LANGDALE through his youngest daughter Mary's marriage to Charles PHILIP, 17th Lord Stourton (b. 1752).
- Mary became sole heir and on death of Philip LANGDALE (1815), 1000 acres and Houghton Hall passed to her 3rd son, Charles STOURTON (b. 1787), who changed his name to LANGDALE.
