DUNMOW - PETTY SESSIONS - APRIL 19

Amos BAKER, a miller, of Felstead, was summoned for assaulting Frank TILBURY, a boy 12 years old, at Felstead, on the 8th inst. - Mr. SNELL appeared for the defendant, who was fined 2s. 6d., aud costs 16s.

"Essex Newsman" (& "Chelmsford Chronicle"), Saturday, April 24, 1875

... Complainant [Frank TILBURY] stated that on the day in question he was returning from school with other boys, when it commenced raining and they took shelter under a shed on the road side; after some time complainant, with the other boys, among whom were two of defendant's sons, pulled a wagon out of the shed; defendant told them to put it back, and when in that act he (defendant) caught hold of complainant and struck him with a stick several times across his back; he then let him go, and complainant picked up some stones and threw them at defendant, who caught him and beat him again; when complainant applied for the summons his back was very much discoloured. - The Chairman, in addressing defendant (after Mr. SNELL had tried to excuse him on the gound of justification), told him the bench were quite willing to give him the full benefit of the provocation he had received, but that he was not justified in taking the law into his own hands, and they would have taken a more lenient view of the case if they had been told he had chastised his sons for the part they took in the affair. He must pay a fine of 2s. 6d. and costs 16s. Paid. - The Chairman then called complainant and cautioned him not to draw the wagon out again, as he might be summoned for so doing.

"Chelmsford Chronicle" & "Essex Newsman" Friday, January 22, 1909

FELSTED
