Edward & Philip Bouquet

Update: 15 May 2012

Researching Edward Robinson BOUQUET, I found these records of an older Edward living in the area concerned by court cases in which the family of Edward Robinson Bouquet was involved. Edward Robinson's father, as well as Edward BOUQUET snr., and many other members of that family, were Clerks in the Bank of England; Edward snr's brother Philip was also a bank clerk. Another researcher, HughG, enabled me to make the link from this Edward - to his father James John; and has also generously shared details of Edward & Caroline Jane's family (August 2011).

* From HughG, Ancestry register index: "James BOUQUET"; also Docklands Ancestors find "James".
The father's name is given simply as "John" - it seems probable that in writing the entry the child's given name was omitted and the father's two given names divided between father and son.

baptismal entry for Philip Bouquet as, instead, James Bouquet

Edward Bouquet

Edward BOUQUET, and perhaps other members of his family, seem to be amongst the illegible entries for 1841.

COURT OF PROBATE AND DIVORCE
Nov. 8
(Before the Judge Ordinary)
BOUQUET v. BOUQUET
Dr. SPINKS appeared for the petitioner, Mr. Edward BOUQUET, a clerk in the Bank of England, who sought a dissolution of his marriage on account of his wife's adultery. The respondent did not appear.
The marriage took place at Hoxton, on the 15th of February, 1850, and the parties resided for a couple of years at various places in the northern suburbs of London. There were no children. Evidence was given to show that the petitioner had treated his wife with great kindness; but that her conduct had soon become very bad. She was in the habit of going out at night and returning home drunk. In 1852 her husband had a serious illness, during which she neglected him so much that a separation, by consent, ensued in the September of 1852. The petitioner, whose income was 120l. a year, made her an allowance of 12s. a week, but she gradually fell into a dissolute mode of life. His brother-in-law, a warehouseman named CORNWALL, had since remonstrated with her on her behaviour, and told her that she might if she liked be again a respectable member of society. She replied that it could not be helped, for she had become an abandoned woman. She also said that while she had the allowance from her husband she was receiving 2l. a week from another man, who was then in America, and that she had had a child by him. Mr. Philip BOUQUET, also a banker's clerk, stated that in July, 1853, he had twice met a gentleman coming downstairs when he had gone to pay her the allowance. Witness having taxed her with adultery, she said she was her own mistress, and that her conduct was nothing to him. Witness refused to give her any more money until he had communicated with his brother; and she made no application for the continuance of her allowance. Evidence was also given to show that she was now a common prostitute.
The court made a decree nisi.

Did Edward & Caroline actually marry? If so, where? Was Edward entitled to remarry in church? He seems very shy about declaring given names: in 1871 he was "Earnest" - and in 1881 the other members of the family were identified only by their initials.

The Late Mysterious Occurrence on the River Lea
Yesterday morning the inquest on the body of Miss Ann SAYERS was resumed and concluded by Mr. W. BAKER, jun., the Deputy Coroner for the eastern division of Middlesex, at the Jolly Anglers, Lea Bridge.
The Coroner asked if the police had succeeded in tracing out the three young men who were supposed to have been the authors of the accident, by running down the boat in which were Mr. NEWMAN and the deceased lady?
Inspector COOPER, of the N division, replied in the affirmative, and produced the eldest of the lads.
The mother of the lad here stepped forward and said, that having read a report of the inquest in the Times, she fully intended to have brought her son before the Coroner, but in the interim Inspector COOPER had been to the Post Office and had given him notice to attend.
The other two young men were also brought before the Coroner by the police.
Matthew John TRACY, of Barrett's-row, Stoke Newington, was then examined, and said he was a clerk in the General Post Office. On the Thursday night in question he was in a boat with Philip BOUQUET and Richard BOULTON. He passed a boat, in which were a lady and gentleman, above the point where the occurrence took place. His boat did not come in collision with the other boat, nor did he hear of the accident until he returned, when he saw two boats, from which two men were dragging for the deceased. His companions became alarmed, and would not continue in the boat, but went ashore. Witness put his companions ashore, and afterwards rowed his boat to Mrs. RADLEY's. The gentleman in the boat did not speak to witness or his companions. He (witness) was positive that he did not hear any call for assistance, neither did he perceive any one fall into the water. They were all out for the space of two hours, but they only paid 1s. for the boat, in consequence of having been detained by the persons dragging. Witness would swear that he never heard the word "starboard" during that evening.
Philip BOUQUET and Richard BOULTON, two youths of 14, living with their parents, confirmed the above.
Serjeant HAWKES, N6, said that Mr. NEWMAN told him that another boat had struck his just above the first rowlock. Witness observed that a boat coming in the opposite direction could not do any harm, and could only push his boat a little on one side. NEWMAN said that it gave the boat such a lurch that it threw the deceased overboard.
At this stage of the proceedings, the Coroner remarked that he was of opinion sufficient testimony had been given to arrive at the truth, and to remove the suspicious circumstances which arose on the first examination, and the jury would probably arrive at the conclusiąon that it was the manner alone of Mr. NEWMAN which gave rise to the serious suspicitions against him, and which had been cleared up by Mr. RICKARDS. They had no distict evidence that any accident had taken place, except the evidence of Mr. NEWMAN himself, which had not been corroborated. It would be a question for the jury to determine, whether the young lads now present caused the lamentable occurrence of which they denied all knowledge.
The room was then cleared of strangers, and after a very short consultation the jury returned a verdict of Accidental Death.
