Middlesex Sessions Yesterday
A DEPRAVED MOTHER
Emily Mary NEWELL, a child eleven years of age, was indicted for stealing two silver spoons the property of James Robert BOUQUET, and Hannah Louise NEWELL, thirty-seven, her mother, was indicted for feloniously receiving the same. The prosecutor lived at No. 16, Somerford-grove, Stoke Newington, and the little girl was employed in his house. The evidence clearly showed that she stole the spoons, and that the mother received them, and raised money upon them, fully knowing that her child had stolen them from her master. The jury found the prisoner "Guilty," but recommended the girl to mercy. - The prosecutor, who seemed to take a great interest in the child, expressed a hope that she might be removed from her mother. The father was in respectable employment, earning 26s. a week, and he would take care that she was better brought up for the future. - The assistant-judge concurred in this, and sentenced the girl to ten days' solitary confinement in Westminster bridewell. In passing sentence on the mother, he said this was not a case for transportation, that punishment being more applicable to common or general receivers, - but he hoped the sentence he would pass would be an example to others, not to train up their offspring in guilt. He ordered her to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for eighteen calendar months.

Apparently Richard emigrated to New Zealand. The North Otago Times of 3 April 1886 cites the evidence of Richard Budden BOUQUET before a magistrate's court, relating to a forged cheque:

Richard Budden BOUQUET, licensee of the Criterion hotel, said,
On the 19th March accused came to the hotel about 2 o'clock, and asking for a blank cheque on the Colonial bank, obtained it and took it away. Aout ten minutes afterwards accused returned with the cheque (produced) filled up and signed. ...

The present-day "host" of the Criterion sent me this message:

... Richard BOUGUET or BOQUET (this is the spelling I have in my info) was the licensee in 1886-87 ... most of my notes have some history behind the licensee or proprieters, but this is not the case for Richard .... The data I have was prepared in 1996 ... I have the full list of historic licensees and proprieters and dates.

The Criterion Hotel in Oamaru today, history, photos

At the beginning of 1887 Richard ceased to be Lessee of the Hotel, as indicated in the notice he had published in the North Otago Times of 10 February 1887:

As at 5 December 2011 I have no further information regarding this family.

James Robert : Burton Bouquet, Augusta Emily Jane Bouquet

Burton BOUQUET b. 3Q 1855 (Hackney 1b/262); Chr. 22 July 1855 St Matthias Stoke Newington; d. 1Q 1917
m. Emma Clara HASKER 2Q 1896 (Hackney 1b/771) - the daughter of Mary Debray BOUQUET

The Hasker Family

Augusta Emily Jane BOUQUET b. 1Q 1861 (Chelsea 1a/152) (remained Spinster)

Burton and Augusta lived with their father until his death.

1901: 84, Leswin Road, Hackney, London
Burton BOUQUET, Head age 47 b. (1854) Dalston, London (Clerk)
Emma BOUQUET, Wife age 50 b. (1851) Dalston, London
Augusta BOUQUET, Sister (Single) age 43 b. (1858) Chelsea, London

In 1891 and 1901 Amelia BOUQUET (b. c.1824) was living at 84 Leswin Road.

Since Burton has a younger wife in 1911, it must be supposed that Emma Clara HASKER died after 1901 and before 1911; this is the only apparently possible death registration for her, and while the given name of "Clara" does not appear, the age is right:

Emma Eliza BOUQUET d. 4Q 1909 age 58 (Islington 1b/168)

I can find no second marriage for Burton BOUQUET - however he has a wife Eliza age 46 in 1911, a Laundress; I don't think Emma [HASKER] BOUQUET would have become a Laundress? Also there is no later death than 1909 which might be hers. Nor is there a death for an "Eliza BOUQUET".

1911: 23 Harcombe Road, Stoke Newington, London [no. of rooms: indecipherable]
Burton BOUQUET, Head age 56 b. (1855) Stoke Newington, London (Traveller Combs And Fancy Goods)
Eliza BOUQUET, Wife age 46 b. (1865) Homerton (Laundress)

1911 census signature of Burton Bouquet

Burton BOUQUET d. 1Q 1917 age 61 (Hackney 1b/683)

I cannot find Augusta in 1911, nor any death registration for "Augusta BOUQUET" - however, this may have been Augusta:

Emily J. A. BOUQUET d. 3Q 1945 age 85 (Ormskirk 8b/629) [b. c.1860; Augusta's birth was registered in 1Q 1861]
