From William White's History, Gazetteer & Directory of Devon, 1850

NORTH TAWTON
"... a small ancient town, pleasantly situated on the east side of Taw valley, 6 miles N.E. of Okehampton, and 10 miles W. of Crediton, has in its parish 1728 inhabitants, and about 5350 acres of land, exclusive of Ilton Moor and Stone Moor, now being enclosed and cultivated. It was anciently a market and borough town, and is still governed by a portreeve elected annually, who has a small field during his year of office. From its ancient appellation of Cheping Tawton, it is evident that it had a market long before the grant of John Valletort in 1270, of a market on Wednesday and a fair for three days at the festival of St. Nicholas. The market which was afterwards held on Friday, was discontinued about 1720; but in 1849 a small Market House was erected in the town at the cost of 750, raised in 5 shares, and the market was re-established, to be held on Thursday. Here are three annual fairs, on the third Tuesdays in April and December, and the second Tuesday in October.

In the town is a large tan yard and a woollen factory, the latter of which has been employed in the manufacture of serges, &c., from a very early period. ...

The manor was an ancient demesne of the Crown, and was held successively by the Valletort, Champernowne, St. Leger, and Fellowes families, the latter of whom purchased it in 1718. The Hon. Newton Fellowes is now lord of the manor and owner of a great part of the parish, and the rest belongs to the Trustees of the late Lord Rolle, and several smaller owners. ..."

NORTH TAWTON

... a parish and small ancient town, pleasantly situated on the east side of the Taw Valley, 6 miles N.E. of Okehampton, and 10 miles W. of Crediton, is in Okehampton union, county court district and rural deanery, South Molton petty sessional division, North Tawton hundred, and Totnes archdeaconry. It had 2081 inhabitants in 1871, and comprises 5814 acres of land. In the parish is a station on the North Devon Railway.

It was anciently a market ... [see 1850 above] Here are three annual fairs, on the third Tuesdays in April and December, and the second Tuesday in October.

In the town is a large tan yard and a woollen factory, the latter of which has been employed in the manufacture of serges, &c., from a very early period. Most of the modern brick and slated houses occupy the sites of old thatched cob buildings, which were burnt down during the last 50 years. The manor was an ancient demeane of the Crown, and was held successively by the Valletort, Champernowne, St. Leger, and Fellowes families, the latter of whom purchased it in 1718. The Earl of Portsmouth is now lord of the manor and owner of a great part of the parish, and the rest belongs to the Hon. Marke Rolls, and several smaller owners. Crook Burnell, alias Stone, belongs to the Sturt family. Near the church is a moated site, supposed to have been the ancient seat of the Valletorts.

PETTY SESSIONS are held at the Market House bi-monthly by the South Molton magistrates.

THE CHURCH (St. Peter) is an ancient structure, with a tower containing six bells. The Register dates from 1538. The living is a rectory, valued in K.B. at 32 4s. 7d., and 1831 at 884, is in the patronage and incumbency of the Rev. R. Hole, B.C.L., who has a good residence in the Elizabethan style.

The BIBLE CHRISTIANS, and PLYMOUTH BRETHREN have small chapels here. The church lands and cottages are let for about 28 a year. The Free School was endowed in 1746 by the Rev. Richard Hole, with a house and 10 acres of land at West Newton.

The SCHOOL BOARD, which was formed in 1872, consists of the Rev. Robert Hole (chairman), and Messrs. Willam Salter (vice-chairman), John Pedder, John Shillson, and Hugh Pyke. Schools, accommodating 200 children, were built in 1874, at a cost of 1800.

NORTH TAWTON MIDDLE CLASS SCHOOL, a handsome building adjoining the rectory house, was erected in 1863, on a site given by the Earl of Portsmouth, at a cost of 1000, raised by subscription, his lordship contributing 500. The poor have about 26s. 8d. yearly from the gifts of Christopher Kelland and Edmund Rowland.

From Kelly's Directory of Devon & Cornwall, 1893 (Devon)

NORTH TAWTON

... is a small market town and parish near the old road from Exter to Okehampton, and on the river Taw, which is here crossed by a bridge of four arches, leading to Hatherleigh and Okehampton ... Water was conveyed into the town from Slade Farm, through iron pipes, in the year 1851, at an expense of 600, raised in shares of 5 each. Gas works were erected in 1869, at a cost of 750, and are the property of a company.

The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of rubble and granite, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of six bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower with shingled broach spire, containing a clock, dated 1640, and 6 bells, recast in 1865-70 from a previous peal of four; the tower is of rubble, withe walls of great thickness, and is probably Early English work; the roof of the nave is of panelled oak, the wall plate and bosses beng elegantly carved; there are stained windows at the east end of each aisle,
and one in the south to John Chapple (d. 1879)
and Lovedy his wife (d. 1858);
in the north aisle is a memorial window, with an inscription on brass below it to
Sir Edward Gostwyck bart. (d. 1766),
and Loveday (Gostwyck), his wife (d. 1786);
and to Josias Gard (d. 1825),
erected in 1869 by Agnes (Gostwyck), wife of Josiah Gard;
she died December 9th, 1870;
there is another window in the south aisle with similar inscription to
John Kelland Durant (d. 1877),
and Sarah Luccombe, his wife (d. 1836);
in May 1893 a memorial window was erected by Mr. John Jackman of Welling, Kent, a native of this town, to members of his family,
and there are fragments of ancient stained glass in the windows of the north aisle; on the north side of the church is a lime-tree avenue, terminating with a lych gate; there is also a sun-dial fixed on the south wall of the tower; the church affords 600 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. ... petty sessions are held here alternately with Chulmleigh.

A clock tower of red brick with freestone dressings, from designs by Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect, of Exeter, was erected in the square by public subscription in 1887, at a cost of 130.

Here are large woollen mills, a branch factory belonging to Messrs. J. Shaw and Sons Limited, of Halifax, enlarged in 1887, and employing about 150 persons in the manufacture of blankets and serges; here also are Mr. J. C. Tavener's flour mills. ...

Fairs for cattle and horses are held on the 3rd Tuesday in April, 2nd Tuesdy in October and 1st Tuesday in December, and great markets are held on the last Thursdays in February & June, and first Thursday in August.

On the hill overlooking the town is a wooden house brought from Norway, belonging to Mrs. Vicary of Enmore, near Bridgwater and now in the occupation of Lieut.-General William Gordon. About a mile from the town is a hollow in the ground called "Bathe Pool", usually dry, but which occasionally fills with water and overflows. ... Near the church is a moated site called Court Green, supposed to have been the ancient seat of the Valletorts. ...

The soil is various; subsoil, principally red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and roots. The area is 5,784 acres, rateable value, 8,748: the population in 1891 was 1,737.

From Kelly's Directory of Devon, 1919

NORTH TAWTON

"... The Manor ... descended to the Earl of Portsmouth; in 1904 it was purchased by John C. Shaw esq. of Brooklands, Halifax, Yorks[hire], and presented by him to the North Tawton Parish Council. ... The Barton, which was formerly known as Cottle's Barton, has belonged since 1907 to W. A. Knapman esq. ... The North Tawton Parish Council are lords of the manor; Ernest May esq., the trustees of the late Gen. Sir H. P. De Bathe bart. (d. 1907), Mrs. J. M. Pope, A. S. Perkins esq. and E. C. Nicholls esq. are the principal landowners. Nearly all the farmers own their farms.

The late Mr. Frank Henson Gibbings of Nottingham (d. 1918), left a field and a sum of money for a memorial park for the use of the parish, vested in the parish council and two trustees; a portion of the gift to be applied for a permanent memorial to the North Tawton men who have fallen in the war.

... The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and roots. The area is 5,951 acres of land and 16 of water; rateable value, 9,683; the population in 1911 was 1,455 in the civil and 1,431 in the ecclesiastical parish."

"BROAD NYMET is a rectory and parish, paying poor and highway rates to North Tawton, but ecclesiastically annexed to Bow or Nymet Tracey; it is the property of Mrs. Prickman."
