bullet  General Notes:

Hey Char, Thanks for the links. This so cool, I had no idea this was on the net. The family does appear on page 342 of this census, last family enumerated (#772 I think).

William Mason was born between 1790-1800 probably in KY. He married Eleanor Richardson on Feb. 16, 1830 in Howard Co.MO according to the book "Early Marriages in Missouri before 1850". William must have died before 1850 because in the census for 1850 "Nelly Mason" is the head of the household. Her children listed were James, Mary, Moss, George, Tyler and Isabelle. (The family continues on page 343). Now I know nothing else of William Mason, however an Eleanor Mason did marry John Holman on Apr. 13, 1852 in Macon Co. according to marriage books. If you notice the family enumerated right above Nelly Mason's is John Holman's, so this must be our Eleanor Mason that remarried. I havent been able to find any Holmans in the latter censuses for Macon Co. William Mason is as far as I have been able to trace back, but I believe he was from KY but dont know what county. I do know however that Eleanor was the daughter of James Richardson and Anna Tilly who came from Shelby Co.KY. I have seen in a marriage book that James Richardson married Anna Tilly, daughter of Lazarus Tilly (Tilley), in Shelby Co. KY on Jully 18, 1807. That is as far as I go on this line, I am assuming they originally all came from Virginia.

I hope you are still with me, I know this is alot of info thrown at you at once, Please feel free to ask me any questions if you get lost.

Now on the Garlock side, I am as far back as Henry Garlock, born May 24, 1807 in Washington Co. MD. He died on Jan. 30, 1894 in Adair Co.MO. He married Esther Cuppett on Mar. 16, 1834 in Bedford Co.PA. She was born Apr. 24, 1814 in Bedford Co.PA and died July 2, 1898 in Adair Co.MO. She was the daughter of John Cuppett and Susannah Spahr of Bedford Co.PA. Both Henry and Esther are buried in the Prairie Bird cemetery near Gibbs, Adair Co.MO. I know nothing of Henry's parents but he was born in Washington co. Maryland.

Henry and Esther migrated to Preston co. VA (now WV) and had ten children. Their son Henry Clay Garlock is our line. Henry Clay is also buried in the Prairie Bird Cemetery and has a military marker only. It reads Co. D 21st MO Inf., and I know he was a union soldier in the civil war because his obit tells quite alot of info about his military service. He married Mary Ann Pierson (Pearson) on Dec. 24, 1865 probably during his service in the war. I have no idea what county or state the marriage occurred. This marriage date appears in his obit.

Now for Mary Ann Pierson, censuses state she was born in TN, but I dont know what county. Here is the 1880 census Macon Co., LaPlata township for the family: Henry C. Garlock 36 VA MD PA Mary A. 40 TN NC NC Wm. H. 13 IL VA TN Geo. J. 11 IL VA TN Eddy 6 IL VA TN Katy 4 MO VA TN Lucian 1 MO VA TN Louisa Pierson 71 NC NC NC

From this we can figure that Mary Ann's mother was Louisa and she was from NC. But that is as far as I get.

Well, I better let you decipher this for now but I'll send more. I'm about ready to print out all the Garlock info I have entered in my computer. It list all the children of Henry and Esther Garlock and their descendants I have been able to find and I'd like to enter all the Frisinger names to it. Write back with any questions. Your cousin in MO, Lynn

The only date I have for Nelly is abt. 1805 according to the 1850 Census, but the census is known to be off by a couple of years on ages. I havent been able to find her on any other census. I think after she married John Holman they moved on west.

<Hi Lynn, My name is Alison Bigbee--I ( along with my cousin, Pat Richerson) am researching my husband's 4x's ggrandfather, Schuyler Richardson (b. abt. 1813 in KY) who could possibly be a son of James Richardson and a brother to your and Char's Nelly....I thought that I would introduce myself:):) Thank you so much for sending me the email below...I suspected that James Richardson (married to Anna Tilley) died in Macon County, MO. I had found James (at age 55, b. KY--***I think the census taker has his age wrong**:) and Anna (age 58, b. KY) along with a daughter, Polly M. (age 38, b. KY--another possible sibling to Schuyler?) in the 1850 Macon County, MO census--Page 120, dwelling 20. My Schuyler Richardson (age 37, b. KY) is on page 154, dwelling 506. Schuyler Richardson purchased land in Macon County in 1840--I found the Land Patent on the BLM website. James V. Richardson also purchased land in Macon County. Your Nelly is in Macon County, also, in 1850? In the 1860 census-- Macon County, Mo, West Richland Township, I found on page 86, dwelling 598, family 601 James Richardson (age 71, b. VA) and Ann (age 72, b. NC)--would this be James and Anna Tilley Richardson? James V. Richardson (age 40, b. KY) is in East Independence Township with his family--living next door to him is a James W. Mason (age 27) and family. There is a will index on the Macon County usgenweb site that lists Probate Records....in folder # 940, there is an Estate of James Richardson with Jno. V. Richardson listed under the heading "Assigned and Information"--I think he may be the administrator or in charge of the estate. There are several other James Richardson's listed (Jas. V. Richardson is listed with Cynthia A. Richardson listed as admr.--folder 2867) I would love to get ahold of James Richardson's estate records--maybe his children are listed!??? I was thinking of my Schuyler's name and where it came from--it is unusual. There is a Schuyler County in Illinois were Joshua Richardson ended up (Schuyler County is not next to Macoupin County but is near it:)> I need to sort and study through all the messages on the Garlock/Mason site about the Tilley's and Richardson's--thank you for posting them, Char! I don't know whether you are a member of Char's site, Pat? Also, in response to your email, Pat, I don't think that Schuyler was Nelly's uncle--I think that Nelly was about 41 in the 1850 Macon County census (am I right, Char?) That would make them the right age to be brother and sister!I also think that there were 2 James Richardsons (father and son)...James V. Richardson (age 40 in the 1860 census) and James Richardson (age 71 in the 1860 census, married to Anna Tilley.) Let's get ahold of the probate record for James Richardson with Jno. V. Richardson listed as estate manager (or whatever "assigned and Information" stands for:):) and see if his children are listed (maybe Nelly and Schuyler are in it!)

I have been very puzzled over Nelly and her second marriage. She did marry John Holman Apr. 13, 1852 in Macon Co. and it seems they don't show up on the 1860 Census for Macon Co. Could they have died before 1860 or do you think they moved West? I did find some info on Nelly's daughters....

William and Nelly had three known daughter...Isabella m. Sam Sharp Mathis Dec. 26, 1867 Macon Co. Mary Ann m. James H. McMullen Apr. 20, 1852 Macon Co. Nancy J. m. James Ferguson Oct. 2, 1870 Macon Co. These marriages were found in a book of Macon County Marriages.

Sharp and Izzie lived in Macon Co. I found that Izzie died Mar. 1904 in LaPlata.

I think James and Mary Ann McMullen moved to El Paso Co., Colorado. Lets try to see what we can find out on the Colorado 1880 Census. This is what I found on Mary Ann for 1860-1870.

1860 CENSUS MISSOURI, Macon County,East Independence Township, family 1319: James H. McMullen 27 KY, Mary A. 24 MO, Sarah J. 2 MO, Nancy Mason 14 MO. Nancy is her sister

1870 CENSUS MISSOURI, Macon County, Richland Township, family 19: J.H. McMullen 38 KY farmer 480/200, Mary Ann 35 MO housekeeper, Sarah J. 11 MO, William P. 9 MO, Georgia Ellen 6 MO, Arminta 3 MO.

McMullen does not appear in 1880 for Macon Co. MO. They must have moved West. I really would like to know if Nelly died between 1852-1860 in Macon Co. or if they moved.

I found Nelly Mason in the 1850 census Macon County living right next to John Holman and his wife and children:
Dwelling 762, family 772 Page 171
Nelly age 45 born KY
James 19 IL
Mary 17 IL
Moss (or Mofs) age 15 born IL
George 13 IL
Tyler 10 IL
Isabella 8 IL
Nancy 6 IL
Interestingly enough, I did a search on Tyler Mason in Missouri on Ancestry.com and came up with the following:
Tyler A. Mason Private (Confederate) Co. B 5 Missouri Infantry
Then: In "Missouri Confederate Death Records" on Ancestry.com: Mason Tyler, Private from MC (Macon?) county...Killed at Vicksburg, MS July3, 1863...is this Nelly's son??:)
I want to do more searching tonite...Schuyler Richardson's son, John Harvey Richardson (my 3x's ggrandfather) also served in the Civil War (we suspect) but don't know where!>
Alison

In James Richardson's probate file her name is spelled Ellender or Ellenler
