bullet  Research Notes:

Joel Tilley born 1765 died ca March 1847 in Stokes Co., NC.

He was married to Elizabeth Harris, daughter of William Harris.

A grandson, Joel A. Tilley (b. 28 Feb 1831) applied to the Guion Miller Commission in an attempt to claim funds appropriated by Act of Congress approved June 30, 1906 in favor of the Eastern Cherokees (Guion Miller Application No. 40846). Joel A. Tilley said his grandmother Elizabeth Harris was a daughter of William Harris who he said was thought to be 1/2 Cherokee Indian. The Guion Miller Commission rejected the claim, however.

Joel Tilley made his will on 10 Apr 1842 and died before March 1847 when his Will was probated in Stokes Co., NC.

Abstract of the will: Named his wife, Elizabeth Tilly who he left $120, negros Harry and Sary, the stock she wants, household goods, and plantation.

To son Thomas Jefferson Tilly he gave the land whereon he now lives in Surry Co.

To John Tuttle who married my daughter Elley Tilly, left land where they now live in Surry Co.

To son Aron B. Tilly, left 600 acres of land where he now lives in Stokes Co. and $50 which John Tuttle is to pay him since Aron's land is judged to be worth less than John's.

To Silas Tucker and my daughter Francis Tucker, left land in Stokes Co. where he now lives containing 500 acres.

To son Moses Tilly, left land whereon he now lives in Surry Co. agreeable to lines drawn between him and John Francis who married Nancy Tilly.

To John Francis who married my daughter Nancy Francis, left a tract of land in Surry Co.

Executors: Wife Elizabeth Tilly, son A. B. Tilly, and son-in-law Silas Tucker. Signed: Joel Tilley. Wit.: James Lyon, Martin Simmons, Ephraim Simmons.

Most researchers believe this Joel Tilley is the son of Lazarus Tilley (1744-1814) who went to Shelby Co., KY in mid-1790s. "Early Families of NC Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service" (Vol. 2) says that Lazarus sold his land on Snow Creek in Stokes Co. to this Joel Tilley who stayed behind in NC and cites Stokes Co. Deed Book 3, page 352. That deed should be examined to see if it states a relationship between these two men and if it says how Lazarus had gotten the land.

We know that a Henry Tilley got patents of land on Snow Creek and it has been claimed that this Lazarus Tilley (1744-1814) was the son of the Henry Tilley who died and left will dated 13 Sept 1789 and probated Feb 1790 in Surry Co., NC naming a son Lazarus and leaving him his land on Snow Creek.

This Lazarus IS NOT the Lazarus Tilley who was a pensioned Rev. War Soldier from Orange Co., NC.

I'm posting this information because the information given in posting number 117 has combined information on these two different Lazarus Tilleys in addition to listing part of the children of Lazarus Tilley who died 1814 in Shelby Co. with part of the children of Joel Tilley who died in 1847 in Stokes Co., NC.
