bullet  General Notes:

William Coats was a Baptist Minister.

Moved to Callaway Co., MO about 1817, after living for some time in Smith County TN.

Records of the Primitive Baptist Church show William Coats and Nancy Coats as members in 1802...land records for SmithCounty TN refer to Mr. Coats' old line....indicating an early date in Smith County TN

This is the farthest back that they are documented at present....we do not know who his parents were at present...some think it is William Coats and Francisof Kings Creek, Newberry County SC...but I am doubtful of that since there is another William Coats who dies in Bedford County TN about 1824 leaving a widow there, I think this is the William Coats that was in the war of 1812 and there is no indication that Rev William Coats was ever in the war of 1812 or lived in Bedford County, TN

We have not found any documentation as to his parents, but earlier published genealogies have him listed as the son of William Coats of Kings Creek and his wife Frances in Newberry County, SC

I hope you don't mind if I jump into the middle of this discussion, but I need clarification on Morgan's (Coats) residence. He may have been in Jackson County, but in 1830 he was in Jasper County GA next door to widow, Jane Coats. A John Coats lived nearby. Did he go to Jackson later? All three of these Coats families were indexed to Jackson in 1830, but the person who compiled the index made a mistake. Jasper County follows Jackson on the same roll of film, and pages 368 and 369 fall into Jasper, not Jackson.

I have been searching Jasper for my Wilson Coats, b. ca 1811 in SC. He married Susan Pryor in 1830 in Jasper County. They soon moved to Pike County and had six children, but only one son named William B. Coats, born ca 1845. Both Jane and John Coats, above, were old enough to be his parents, but I can't break the barrier to get there. Morgan, b. ca 1802, was the age of a sibling. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Notes on MORGAN COATS

b.~ 1803 South Carolina d. ~1863 Catahoula Parish LA.

First found on census 1830 Jasper co. Georgia

Jane Coats was on 1830 census one house before Morgan C. We found Jane Coats listed in Land Lottery Records as widow of Kinsey Coats and maiden name was Turner. Do not know what if any connection to Morgan C.

George Head was house listed after Morgan on 1830 census.

Morgan Coats, John Coats and George Head were listed as
purchasing items from Estate of James Coats Jasper

Co. GA. In 1834. William Coats was Adm. Of estate.

1840 Morgan C. on Lauderdale co. MS. Census.

1838 Morgan and Sophia Coats were listed as charter members Fellowship Baptist Church (Bailey) Merdian MS. George and Elizabeth Head and Susan Coats also listed as charter members. Morgan and George H. were made Deacons. We do not know what their connection is.

See names of children listed above.

1850 Morgan C. and children on Catahoula Parish Lousania census but no wife listed.

1849 Mortality Schedule for "
" " Listed Sophia Coats death from Cholera.

1851 Morgan Married Sophia Rawllings. Apparently 1st and 2nd wife were named Sophia.

Several Baptist Church records list Morgan C. as Deacon.

Also several Land / Deed records on Morgan found in Catahoula
P. LA.

1860 Morgan on Catahoula P. census for LA.

We think Morgan died 1863 from info in Pine Grove Baptist
Church Minutes. Not sure where he is buried.

Morgans son George Washington Coats and his family left LA. For Texas about 1875.

They eventuly settled in Keechi Leon Co. TX and bought land in 1885 that is still in our family today.(2002)

We have no info on Morgan Coats prior to 1830 other than
fron census records showing he was born in SC.

Columbia County Court records list heirs of James Coats in 1795 as: Elizabeth Coats Watson (husband Thomas Watson), Eady Ray (husband Benjamin Ray), Melly Watson (husband Joseph Watson), Mary Coats, John Coats of Newberry Co, SC and Rebeckah Watson (husband Benjamin Watson).

Were these Coats women from Newberry Co, SC? These marriages were not located in GA. Did they occur in SC during the early years of the Revolution when Quakers left Wrightsboro, some for Ohio, some for SC and some for Savannah (temporarily)?

bullet  Research Notes:

We have just documented Rev William Coats' father to William Coats w Frances of Kings Creek, Newberry County SC and died in 1784 in Kershaw County SC..

See link for details: http://www.coatsarchive.us/rwmcoats.html

There are several possible connections for Rev William Coats in SC. 1. son of William Coats m Francis of Kings Creek 2. or he could be one of the other William's in SC, we don't know about yet. Thomas Coats had a son named William - there is also another William whose wife's name was Elizabeth, there is also other Williams. There just isn't the documentation at present to determine, who Rev William Coats' parents are in SC.

We believe that Notley Coats of Chester County SC is from Maryland, that his father is a Charles Coats, but probably not the same Charles Coats in SC. That Notley had at least one brother named James Coats and we believe he is also found in SC. Charles Coats and sons show up on the Maryland tax lists for Frederick County Maryland in 1772/73, there is no indication yet that Charles ever left that county, but the land records have not been explored.

Rev William Coats in 1836 when he died was at least 80 years of age....which would give him a birth date of around 1756, much earlier than earlier research indicates. William Coats of Kings Creek SC left a will and died in 1784, he names two minor children in his will a William and Benjamin. Assuming the age of majority was 18 in 1784 that would make his son William born in 1766, if the age of majority was say 16, then a birth date of 1768, if 21 was the age of majority then a birth date of 1763. So it would seem that something is not quite right, if he was 80 when he died possible birth date of 1756 and yet in 1784 he would have been a minor with a birth date somewhere between 1768 to 1763

DNA groups for Coate, Coates, Coats

*************
The line above Rev William Coats is not proven and is most likely incorrect
DNA testing has shown that Rev William Coats is not related to Marmaduke Coates out of Newberry County, SC, if Marmaduke is the son of Samuel Coats m to Mary Saunders
DNA testing at this point is inconclusive as to which line Rev William Coats relates to in South Carolina

We need a test from Barton Coats or Wilson Coats of Robertson County or Bedford County TN to determine if Rev William Coats is indeed related to William Coats of Kings Creek in Newberry County, NC

William married Nancy Baker, daughter of John Baker and Unknown, about 1791. (Nancy Baker was born about 1775 in probably Stafford County, VA 1 and died on 23 Jul 1849 in Coats' Prairie, Callaway, MO 1.)
