[990] John Miller was a printer by profession, and one of the earliestarbiters of "Freedom of the Press". From 1769-1771, he published aseries of articles called the "Junius Letters". These were publicletters (about sixty in all) addressed to the King of England,protesting censorship of the press. He was tried and acquitted, butlater imprisoned for a time, anyway. Undoubtedly, this was a majorconsideration for his decision to immigrate to the American colonies.

[991] His Will was probated on Jan 4, 1808. In it he did not mention hiswife (probably indicating she was already deceased) nor did hedesignate any executor. He did name children John, Wilkes, William,and Elizabeth Miller; also grandchildren Marian Edwards and Mary AnnHutson. The only estate specified was land "on 18 Mile Creek and BearSwamp." Witnesses were William Robertson, Joseph B. Earle, and JamesWood.

[992] This based on the fact she was not mentioned in her husband's Will ofthat date.

[1693] She was listed as the head of her own household, next door to herson-in-law, Rowland Cobb, indicating that she was already a widow fromher marriage to Mr. Edwards.

[1694] At that time she was maintaining her own household next door to son inlaw Rowland Ballard Cobb and daughter Mary Ann Edwards.

[1695] At that time, she was listed as being eighty years of age and livingin the household of her son in law and daughter, George and LaveniaEaton.

[1696] This Will was probated Nov 6, 1826, indicating he had died in theinterim. In it, he named his wife Jane and children Joseph, George,James, William, and Charles Miller. No daughters (if any) werementioned. As a poignant note, he stated, "I have but little to givemy dear children to whom I have given nothing. I wish to express tothem my affectionate regards and regret that I am unable to leave thelegacies worthy of children so affectionate." Co-executors were hiswife and son Charles. Witnesses were Martha M. Dart, Susan Dupre, andJoseph Grisham.
