[683] He became a well-recognized minister in the Episcopal faith, and atthe time of his death was the Archbishop of Alabama. His line hasretained the 's' at the end of the surname.
[684] At the age of 17 Cobbs began teaching school and studying on his ownfor the ministry. With no formal training Cobbs was confirmed andordained a deacon on the same day, and in 1825 was ordained a priest. He served as chaplain for the University of Virginia and rector ofchurches in Petersburg, Virginia and Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1844 hemoved to Alabama to serve as the state's first Episcopal bishop. Cobbsoversaw the early development of the diocese in Alabama.
[9739] According to A HISTORY OF BRISTOL PARISH, VIRGINIA; Rev. PhillipSlaughter; Richmond; 1879; the Rev. Nicholas Cobbs married his ownfirst cousin, Lucy H.L. Cobbs. The bond for this marriage states shewas the daughter of Edmund Cobbs, which does corroborate thisinformation. The Bondsman was one M. H. Garland. The ceremony wasperformed by William S. Reid.
[7632] This is calculated on the fact his wife was listed as the widowed headof her own household on the 1880 census.

[1638] Richard Rison filed his Will in Smith County, Tennessee, on 9 April1838. It was probated in May 1839, indicating he had died in theinterim. In it he named his wife Mary, and children James, Richard,Archable, "Elizabeth Sheppard heirs", "Mary Hasson heirs", "PeterRison heirs", Nancy Rison, David, and Henry. Witnesses were Thomas W.Wootten and Horace Oliver. There was no executor named.
[9807] It is purely speculative that Richard Rison had been marriedpreviously and was a widower with several children at the time of hismarriage to Polly Cobb. His son Peter Rison pre-deceased him, andPeter's heirs were referred to in Richard's Will. It is known thatRichard and Polly married in 1819. If Peter were a child by thismarriage, it would have been necessary for him to have married andfathered more than one child by the time his father Richard died in1838 (possible but not probable). Further, along this same vein, inhis Will, Richard referred to at least nine children. He was marriedbarely twenty years at the time he died. Again, it is possible butnot probable that he and Polly Cobb produced nine children thatsurvived (considering the infant mortality rate) in that period oftime. Elsewhere in this database will be found another Peter Risonwho was born in 1786, and married to Sallie Bibb Booker in 1814. ThisPeter died in 1834. Could this have been the son of Richard Rison byan unknown first wife?
