[964] This census report provides confusion. It is known Martha had beenmarried at least twice prior to 1870, and that she had at least fourchildren by then (at least one of which was definitely still living in1870). However, according to the census, she was living with hermother and was made to appear as though she was yet single.
[965] At that time, she was listed as Martha Adams in her mother'shousehold. As she was not acknowledge by her father Robert Cobb inhis Will, it is doubtful she ever took the COBB name.

[3355] Rearch is just beginning to ascertain the identity of this couple. Theestate papers of Ambrose Cobb, now in the North Carolina StateArchives, have been examined by a certified professional genealogist. In those papers, reference is made to one James McGinnis as a son inlaw of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb.
[3356] In his household at that time was three males 10-15 years of age, twomales 16-25 years of age, one male over 45 years of age (himself), andone female over 45 years of age (his unknown Cobb wife). His sonJames McGinnis Jr was living next door.
[9967]
Research is just beginning to ascertain the identity of this couple. The estate papers of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb, now in the North CarolinaState Archives, have been examined by a certified professionalgenealogist. Those papers refer to a James McGinnis as being the sonin law of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb, indicating he had married aheretofore unknown daughter of the Cobbs. This marriage would havealmost certainly taken place before the Cobbs left Virginia, in 1777.The 1790 census of Lincoln County does not list any children in thehousehold of Ambrose and Sarah Cobb. Further, the name McGinnis iseasily found in the records of Halifax County, Virginia, home of theCobbs before moving to North Carolina.
It is known that two McGinnis males, Ambrose and William, married thedaughters of James Cobb, son of Ambrose and Sarah, in Lincoln County,in 1813 and 1816 respectively. It is further known that one ShadrickCobb was the bondsman for the marriage of one John McGinnis toElizabeth Starrit, in Lincoln County, on Nov 26, 1810. While theidentity of both John McGinnis and Shadrick Cobb is also a mystery, these facts do tend to indicate a strong connection between thesurnames Cobb and McGinnis.
