William lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia (later Charlotte County),on land deeded to him by his father until 1768, when he sold out andmoved to South Carolina. He served in the Revolutionary War, duringwhich he was shot in the head by a Tory, carrying an ugly scar theremainder of his life. He received a land grant of 400 acres inLaurens District, South Carolina, on July 8, 1774, near the town ofWaterloo. See "Waterloo: A History of the Anderson Family".
The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research. Pp. 190-191: SaleBill of the Estate of William Anderson decd. Purchasers: JohnMiddleton, Andrew Anderson, James Anderson, James Rains, AmbroseAnderson, John Duncan, Molley Anderson, Samuel Anderson, GeorgeMorgan, Randolph Mitchell, Robert Young, James Clemons,Lewis Graves,Henry Hazel. James Anderson, admr.
[4851] At that time the household was composed of two free white males agedsixteen and over, three free white males aged under sixteen, five freewhite females, and one other free person. The males are easilyidentified as sons James and Samuel (over sixteen); and Robert,Ambrose, and Andrew (under sixteen). Accounting for the femaleshowever, does present a mystery. There are only three daughterscredited to this marriage...Sarah, Margaret, and Mary Ann. It ispossible the mother was included as a fourth female in theenumeration, but the identities of the remaining free white female andthe "other free white person" are unknown.
