He was the first in our lineage to be called "Ambrose", a name whichhas been repeated so many times in America.
His named his sixth child and third son Ambrose, however this infantdied within days of being born. To continue the name in the family,he named his next son, his eighth and last child, Ambrose. This wasthe individual that became our immigrant ancestor.
Ambrose Cobbs relocated from Eastleigh Court to Petham, about 1601.Quoting from "The Cobbs of Tennessee", Ruralist Press; Atlanta,1968, "It is possible that while living at Petham, Ambrose and his familylived on a tract of land there known as 'Great Cobbs'. This tractcontained 5 acres and was bounded in 1660 by lands of John Thompson tothe north, south and east and by the highway to the west, and anotherparcel of land called 'Little Cobbs' containing 2 acres bounded by thehighway to the east, land late of William Crammer to the south andwest, and lands of John Thomsen (sic) to the north. The two tracts ofland, Great Cobb and Little Cobb, were across the highway from eachother, making a total of seven acres. This land was sold the first ofJune 1660 by John Hawked of Petham, yeoman, to John Thompson (sic).
Ambrose died at Eastleigh Court and was buried at Petham Parish, whichis about six miles south-southwest of Canterbury, near Faversham. Inhis Will he requested that his brother-in-law Stephen Hunt be the soleexecutor. He also requested that Hunt be appointed the guardian ofhis minor children, For undisclosed reasons, this was apparently aresponsibility that Hunt did not wish to accept. He petitioned thecourt for an exemption and was in fact relieved from this duty. It isnot known if an alternate executor was appointed by the court.
It is interesting to note that Ambrose was concerned with keeping hischildren together as a cohesive family unit, per his appointment ofhis oldest daughter Susanna as the overseer of those children and hisestate. It was apparently his intention that Stephen Hunt manage thebusiness affairs of the estate, while Susanna was to be in charge ofher younger siblings and the household.

It was proved March 26, 1607, indicating he had died during theinterim. In it his three sons shared an inheritence per the Kentishcustom of "gavelkind", meaning all shared equally, without preferenceto the eldest son.

Angelica Hunt had at least one brother, Stephen Hunt of Chislete,County Kent. It is reported she had at least two others; the ReverendRobert Hunt who migrated to America on the original voyage toJamestown, in 1607; and Thomas Hunt who arrived in Jamestown on thesecond supply ship in September 1608. This claim is not definitivelyestablished but the following seems to lend credence to theallegation.
From the records of the Jamestowne Society:
The Reverend Richard Hakluyt, prebendary of Westminster, was selectedby the Virginia Company as its first rector with the approval of theArchbishop of Canterbury. Reverend Hakluyt with the approval of theArchbishop selected as the first Vicar, the Reverend Robert Hunt,A.M., who came to Jamestowne as the pastor of the colonists. RobertHunt had been Vicar of the parish of Reculver in Kent from 1594 to1602. In 1602 he was appointed Vicar of All Saints Church at OldHeathfield, East Sussex.
Robert Hunt, beloved and admired of all, sailed as chaplain of thefleet. The three ships fell down the Thames to the Downs (less than 12miles from Old Heathfield) and anchored there due to contrary winds. Then, they suffered great storms during the six weeks they were insight of England, and many of the company would have given up thevoyage but for the "true devoted example" of Parson Hunt who was madeso "weake and sicke" by the rough weather that "few expected him torecover," yet "all this could never force from him so much as aseeming desire to leave the business."
On May 14 the colonists disembarked on a peninsula that becameJamestowne. Chaplain Hunt dedicated the spot to the glory of God, andthey "began thereon ... in the name of God to raise a fortresse."
The London Company had a provision that each new settlement shouldbecome a parish with its own rector. Robert Hunt was the first rectorat Jamestowne.
Captain John Smith wrote of the men at worship in the open air until achapel could be erected. He describes the scene of a celebration ofthe Holy Communion, with the Holy Table standing under an old saillashed from tree to tree, with a bar of wood fastened between twotrees as a pulpit, and men kneeling on the ground before their firstalter. Services were held daily, according to the rules of the Book ofCommon Prayer. The law of the Church required the Holy Communion to becelebrated at least three times during the year; on Christmas, Easter, and Whitsunday.
The Virginia Company kept constantly in the forefront their plan toChristianize the Indians. Their plan as they began to put into effectincluded the establishment of parishes and the selection of fitclergymen to go overseas; to establish a University with a collegetherein for Indians; and to take Indian youths into English familiesto fit and prepare them for their college.
The Reverend Hunt was living on March 9, 1608 when the colonistsreturned from a trip to see Powhatan to find that a fire had destroyednearly everything. Smith writes that "Good Master Hunt, our preacher, lost his library and all he had but the clothes on his backe: yet nonenever heard him repine at his losse."
The Reverend Hunt must have died soon after the above incident as thewill of the Reverend Hunt was probated in England on July 14, 1608. Inthis will he lists his wife, Elizabeth, and a daughter, Elizabeth, anda son, Thomas. His brother, Steven Hunt of Reculver, was to beoverseer, if his wife were unable to serve. This Thomas Hunt mayhave come to Virginia, as a Thomas Hunt received 50ac in Accomack in1636 for his personal adventure. Thomas Hunt may have been living aslate as 1657 in Accomack County, Virginia.
Also in support of the position that the Rev. Robert Hunt was in factthe brother of Angelica Hunt Cobbs is that fact that on 06 June 1599,one Robert Hunt "clergyman", gave testimony as to the factssurrounding the writing of the Last Will & Testament of Thomas Cobbs,Angelica Hunt's father in law.
[172] She quite possibly died in childbirth with her last child AmbroseCobbs "the Emmigrant".

He was about eleven years of age when his parents moved from EastleighCourt to Petham and was about 15 years old when his father died. Hewas one of the three sons who shared his father's estate gavelkind. Hewas living at Willesborough in 1619 when he married Susan white ofHinxhill.
The last notice of Thomas Cobbs is that he resided at Willesborough, and had at least twelve children.
[4] He was probably about 13 years of age when his father died in 1605. Hewas one of three sons to share gavelkind from his father's estate. Hewas eventually apprenticed to Thomas Pordag of Canterbury, and aftercompleting his training, he became a "freeman" of Canterbury, on 28Oct 1619, at Elmstone. He was successful at business and was thebondsman for the marriage of his sister Elizabeth, in 1619. He was adealer of textiles and fabrics, especially silks. He probably diedsingle without issue.
[5] He was the third son named in his father's Will to share gavelkindfrom his estate.

[2279] This based on the fact his wife was listed as the head of her ownhousehold on the 1840 census of Lincoln County, North Carolina.
[2280] At that time she was living with her son Robert Cobb.
[2281] At that time she was living with her daughter and son in law, Marthaand Wesley Moore.
[2284] There are numerous inconsistencies and conflicting information amongpeople researching the family and descendants of John "Jack" Cobb andwife Anne Long. This researcher is not comfortable with any onepedigree that has been seen. Therefore, the reader should be advisedthat the data concerning this particular family branch requires veryclose inspection and verification.
[2285] By that time three of his children, Rufus, Julia and John were alreadymarried and out of the household. All of his remaining children werepresent.
[2289] His widowed elderly mother was also living in his household at thattime.
