[1793] In 1862, Wilson H. Cobb and brother Jefferson S. Cobb enlisted inFayette County, as Privates in the 26th Alabama Infantry Regiment, forservice during the War Between the States. Cousin Kelsey Miller Cobbhad enlisted in the same regiment and was killed in action at SevenPines, Virginia, in late June 1862. Immediately on enlistment, Wilsonand Jefferson were sent to Virginia as replacement recruits. Soonafterwards Jefferson was wounded causing the amputation of severalfingers from his right hand, an injury of the type that disqualifiedhim from further infantry service. He was reassigned to theConfederate Medical Department and finished the war assigned to theMilitary Hospital at Selma, Alabama. According to his militaryrecords, Wilson was occasionally plagued by an enlarged spleen, probably caused from untreated water, but served the entire remainderof the war with the 26th Alabama.
[1794] In 1855 he was named as a beneficiary of the estate of his grandfatherJohn S. Cobb, in Pickens District, South Carolina. He was named asbeing a minor child under the guardianship of George W. Eaton, whomhis mother had married in January 1854, in Gordon County, Georgia. Therefore his inheritance was paid to Eaton.
[1795] *** On this enumeration he was listed as William H. Cobb. This is theonly written record, among many others, that assigned him the nameWilliam. However, researchers have consistently erroneously identifedhim as William H. Cobb. This is probably due to the fact that he isfound that way in LDS records.***
[9832] The exact date of this marriage is not available as the early marriagerecords of Fayette County, Alabama, have been lost due to fire. However, it is clearly established that at least Wilson Cobb was aresident of Fayette County at the time this marriage occured, and thathis first three children were born in Fayette County. The date iscalculated on the birthdate of the first child of this marriage.
