William Cobbs was bequeathed land in North Carolina, from his father'sestate.
It is known that William and Polly Abernathy had a son William, bornabout 1804 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. Some researchers haveclaimed that this son was the William Cobb that married Martha Harmonin Lincoln County in February 1827. However, the discovery of theelder William's estate papers in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, reveal that son William actually also left Lincoln County, and was aresident of Illinois by 1833.
[148] It is believed that he died the victim of a Cholera epidemic in 1833,along with his son Starling. In the family bible of his daughterDicey Richards, there is a reference to the effect that William,Starling, Nancy, and Jane Hancil all died in July 1833, all withinseven days. This is certainly compatible to the possibility of anepidemic.
[149] Beginning in the 1820's, there was a large migration of settlers fromLincoln County, North Carolina, to southeastern Missouri. This massrelocation was the inspiration of George F. Bollinger, for whomBollinger County, Missouri is named. William Cobb, accompanied bysons Walter and Sterling, made the move in the late 1820's and settledin the Oak Ridge community, in the northern part of Cape GirardeauCounty.
[9659] The name of William Cobb's bride is not legible in the originalrecords. However, some researchers claim her name was Abernathy. And,as Charles Abernathy, William's brother-in-law, was the Bondsman, thisseems likely. Her first name "Polly" is discovered in a petition sheaddressed to the court of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, in July1833, requesting to be relieved of the duty of Administrator of theestates of her son Starling Cobb and her husband William Cobb.Additionally, the family bible of her daughter Dicy Richards refers toher as Mary.
